The Mediterranean Film Institute (MFI) has officially opened the call for applications for the 2025 session of its renowned MFI Script 2 Film Workshops training programme. Since its inception in 2000, the programme has helped develop over 500 film and TV projects, becoming a cornerstone for creative development in Europe and beyond.

The MFI Script 2 Film Workshops provide a robust platform for the development of European and international fiction features, series projects and feature-length documentaries. Participants engage in three parallel, project-based development labs – the Feature Film Lab, Doc Lab and Series Lab – which apply innovative tools and strategies to script and project development. These labs are held simultaneously, fostering creative exchange and networking opportunities among participants.

The programme unfolds through four intensive sessions, incorporating group work, master classes, lectures, plenary sessions, case studies and individual consultations. The workshops emphasise not only the creation of compelling screenplays with a strong dramatic impact, but also the preparation of projects to compete effectively in the global market. Participants are equipped with practical tools for presenting, financing and co-production formation, enhancing their projects’ marketability and potential for international success.

Applications for projects are open until 10 February, while the deadline for story editor trainees is 28 February. The workshops will begin with the first session taking place in June, on the Greek island of Nisyros. The second session will be held online in August and September 2025. The third session will take place in October on the island of Astypalea, and the programme will culminate in a final, online session in January 2026.

The Feature Film Lab is dedicated to scrutinising and advancing film scripts through intensive writers’ rooms, both on location and online. Participants receive personalised guidance aimed at enhancing their unique creative voices while also developing strategies to effectively position their projects in the market, from pitching to devising festival strategies. The Doc Lab creates a dialogue between the factual basis of projects and their authors’ active perspectives, reconciling reality and storytelling to reach the heart of the narrative. It also includes master classes by international professionals who provide insights into how to bring authenticity to stories and who explore effective marketing strategies. The Series Lab delves into every aspect of series development, from premise to season arcs and multi-season potential, with a strong focus on global placement. Active TV writers and writer-producers lead the lab, offering participants hands-on knowledge and relevant experience, as well as insights into handling the complexities of international TV production through master classes.

The workshops also provide positions for story editor trainees in every writers’ room across the Feature Film, Series and Doc Labs. These industry professionals, who do not have their own projects, act as assistant trainers and hone their skills as co-leaders under the guidance of senior trainers. This unique training opportunity equips participants with practical experience in script development.

The programme welcomes European and international creative teams, including screenwriters, producers and directors, developing feature-length fiction films, documentaries or TV series. Additionally, story editor trainee positions are open to professionals interested in enhancing their expertise in story editing and script consultancy.

The MFI Script 2 Film Workshops are supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme in partnership with ERT SA, and are supported by the Municipalities of Nisyros and Astypalea. For more information on this opportunity to elevate your project and join a thriving international network of storytellers, and to apply, visit the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops’ official website.
