A new Ukrainian-French show, titled Glace Noire, is in the works, Cineuropa has learnt. The series is set to be the first French series about extreme figure skating.

This project is the result of a collaboration between three major European production firms: Ukraine’s Space Production, led by Daria Leygonie-Fialko and Kateryna Laskari; and French outfits Hamak Productions, headed by Tatiana Maksimenko, and Effervescence Fiction, founded by Simone Harari Baulieu.

“Two figure skaters. Two worlds of ice. French champion Romane and Ukrainian refugee Kira compete for spots at the Olympics while facing off in impressive extreme skating competitions in the Alps, where skaters risk their lives for videos garnering millions of views. When a body is discovered, a crime investigation forces both worlds to collide,” reads the show’s official synopsis. The series promises to be “a gripping sports crime-drama that cuts through competitive skating’s polished sheen to expose a sport where glory meets survival”.

“Bringing the world of extreme figure skating to the screen is an exciting challenge,” says Leygonie-Fialko, founder of and producer at Space Production. “The bar we’ve set for ourselves is incredibly high: this is the first project of its kind in the French market. It requires a perfect combination of masterful storytelling, cutting-edge technology and artistry. We’re venturing into uncharted territory – not just in terms of narrative, but also in capturing the raw intensity of life-threatening stunts. We’re thrilled to take on this challenge with our amazing partners at Effervescence Fiction and Hamak Productions.”
