The Arthouse Cinema Training (ACT), a globally recognised programme dedicated to the development and networking of independent and arthouse cinema professionals, is set to return to Berlin from 18 to 24 August 2025 for its 22nd edition. As the only initiative of its kind, ACT offers an intensive, week-long workshop that delves into the management of arthouse cinemas, film culture advancement, and industry sustainability.

With its previous edition attracting cinema professionals from over 28 countries, the programme has solidified Berlin’s status as a hub for arthouse cinema. This year’s training will take place at a dynamic campus in the German capital, offering participants an immersive experience supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Berlin Senate Chancellery, and the FFA.

The ACT programme is designed for a wide range of cinema industry professionals, including arthouse cinema employees, programmers, and operators looking to refine their expertise. It also caters to those planning to open an arthouse venue or transition their existing cinema into this model. Additionally, it welcomes festival organisers, distributors, and institutional professionals interested in deepening their understanding of the arthouse sector.

According to Ruben Bax, a 2024 participant from the Netherlands, the training stands out not only for its diverse and international group of attendees but also for the insightful contributions from leading industry experts. “Bringing together people from across the world to discuss their experiences in this niche industry is incredibly inspiring. On top of that, the programme itself offers invaluable knowledge. What’s not to love?” he remarked.

Since its launch in 2003, ACT has trained over 1,100 independent cinema operators and industry professionals from 60 countries. Many alumni have become influential figures in the audiovisual industry, using the expertise gained at ACT to advance their careers and launch successful initiatives—some of which were conceived during the programme itself. This legacy underscores the lasting impact of the training and its role in shaping the future of arthouse cinema.

Participants in ACT 2025 will engage in a dynamic mix of workshops, lectures, masterclasses, and exclusive industry visits, providing them with opportunities to network, exchange knowledge, and explore emerging trends in arthouse cinema. The programme is specifically designed to equip attendees with innovative strategies for promoting and sustaining independent film culture.

The official language of instruction is English, and the participation fee is €1,785 (including VAT). This cost includes all training sessions, materials, hotel accommodation near the venue, and daily breakfast and lunch.

To foster accessibility, scholarships are available for those who may require financial assistance. The CICAE (the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas), the organisation behind ACT, encourages applicants who cannot self-fund their participation to seek support, ensuring that talented individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to benefit from this training.
