After The Past, which earned Bérénice Bejo Cannes’ Best Actress award in 2013, Asghar Farhadi is due to shoot another film in France this autumn, called Parallel Tales. This will be the 10th feature-length movie by the Iranian filmmaker who was first revealed in competition in Locarno in 2006 via Fireworks Wednesday, who won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2012 thanks to A Separation (which was also nominated for Best Screenplay) and once again in 2017 thanks to The Salesman, and who’s been selected four times in competition in Cannes (The Past in 2013, The Salesman in 2016 - winning Best Screenplay and Best Actor -, Everybody Knows in 2018 and A Hero which scooped the Grand Prize in 2021) and twice in Berlin (awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director in 2009 thanks to About Elly and the 2011 Golden Bear for A Separation).
The cast for Parallel Tales will boast a strikingly high-calibre quintet in the form of Isabelle Huppert (nominated for the 2017 Best Actress Oscar, named Best Actress in Cannes and twice more in Venice and Berlin, and recently seen in My New Friends and Visiting Hours), Virginie Efira (awarded 2021’s Best Actress César in 2023 for Paris Memories - amidst other nominations for the trophy – and recently thanks to All to Play For), Vincent Cassel (named Best Actor at the 2009 Césars, also amidst other nominations for the trophy, and recently seen in The Shrouds and Saint-Ex), Pierre Niney (awarded the Best Actor César in 2015, nominated a number of times, including this year for The Count of Monte-Cristo) and Adam Bessa (nominated for this year’s Best Actor Lumière and Best Newcomer César via Ghost Trail).
The story was written by Asghar Farhadi and adapted by Massoumeh Lahidji, but is being kept under wraps for the time being.
Parallel Tales will be produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy on behalf of Memento Production (now on their fifth film with Asghar Farhadi) in co-production with David Levine for American firm Anonymous Content, Andrea Occhipinti for Italian outfit Lucky Red and, on the Belgian side, André Logie for Panache Productions and Gaëtan David for La Compagnie Cinématographique. World sales will fall to Charades (except in the USA where UTA will take the lead) while the film’s release in French cinemas is entrusted to Memento Distribution.
