Polish sales agent New Europe Film Sales will soon be on its way to the 78th Cannes Film Festival (13-24 May) and the accompanying Marché du Film (13-21 May) clutching a robust selection of films at various stages of production. The firm also boasts a world premiere in the Official Selection.
Leading the line-up is the Cannes Première title The Love That Remains, the latest drama by acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason. Set over the course of a year, the film tenderly explores the quiet unravelling of a family as the parents navigate their separation, capturing moments of playfulness, pain and intimacy against the shifting Icelandic seasons. The cast features Saga Garðarsdóttir and Sverrir Gudnason, along with Pálmason’s frequent collaborators Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Þorgils Hlynsson and Grímur Hlynsson. The film is a production between Anton Máni Svansson for Iceland’s Still Vivid and Katrin Pors for Denmark’s Snowglobe, in co-production with HOBAB, Maneki Films, Film i Väst and Arte France Cinema.
Among the upcoming titles from New Europe Film Sales is True-ish, the latest film by Goran Stolevski, a sharp political satire that charts the downward spiral of Janet Paine, a well-meaning yet insecure PR executive from Manhattan. After a meltdown derails her career, she’s sent to the Balkans to lead outreach at a so-called “peace lab”, a cover operation for manufacturing fake news to destabilise fringe EU regimes. Starring Sandra Hüller and Colman Domingo, the film is being produced by Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings (Causeway Films) and is co-represented with French sales agent Charades.
Another standout among the upcoming titles is The Painted Bride, the latest feature from We the Animals director Jeremiah Zagar. The film centres on Elisha, a devoted father, son and husband, whose carefully managed life begins to spiral out of control when a family crisis pulls him back to his native Baltimore. The cast is led by Jeremy Allen White, Mandy Patinkin and Isabella Rossellini. The project is being produced by Jeremy Yaches (Public Record), Paul Mezey and Andrew Goldman (Present Company) alongside Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska (Madants), and is also co-represented with Charades.
Among the projects in post-production is A Prayer for the Dying, a survival-thriller by writer-director Dara Van Dusen. Set in 1870 in the small Midwestern town of Friendship, the film follows a man torn between protecting his young family and defending the tight-knit community that offered him redemption. Starring Johnny Flynn, John C Reilly, Kristine Kujath Thorp and Gustav Lindh, this English-language period drama is being produced by Norway’s Eye Eye Pictures, in co-production with The Bureau, Garagefilm International and Film i Väst, and is co-represented with Anton Corp.
Also, in post-production is Orphan, which sees László Nemes return with a post-war drama set in 1957 Budapest, shortly after the failed uprising against the communist regime (see the news). Again, it is co-represented with Charades.
Finally, among the titles available for buyers are two Berlinale premieres (The Good Sister [+lee también:
