Last week, actor-musician Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight, When They See Us) and actor Teo Yoo (Past Lives, The Recruit) joined the jury for the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary, set to be presented by the Artemis Rising Foundation during the 82nd Venice International Film Festival (27 August-6 September).

The brand-new award, supported by Think-Film Impact Production, honours a documentary feature in the Biennale’s official selection – in or out of competition – that tackles a key social issue. The shortlist includes Kabul, Between Prayers by Aboozar Amini, My Father and Qaddafi by Jihan K, Nuestra Tierra by Lucrecia Martel, Notes of a True Criminal by Alexander Rodnyansky and Andriy Alferov, Cover-Up by Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus, Below the Clouds [+lee también:

Alongside Jerome and Yoo, the jury comprises Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne, Artemis Rising Foundation founder and CEO Regina K Scully, producer and Impact Partners co-founder Geralyn White Dreyfous, screenwriter Misan Sagay, director Edoardo Ponti, and Think-Film Impact Production CEO and founder Danielle Turkov Wilson.

“Real stories are what all of us want, and what the world needs – they inspire us and challenge what we think can be possible. It’s exciting to see documentary storytelling on the rise, and to be part of what this award represents for the future of film,” said Jerome.

Yoo added: “The power of documentary filmmaking to reveal new sides to humanity encourages us all to be more curious about the world around us – it’s such an important art form and one that deserves greater recognition and opportunity; I’m deeply honoured to be part of this new award.”

The winner, selected on the basis of social importance, journalistic integrity, artistic creativity and narrative disruption, will receive a cash prize of $10,000 (€8,600) and an impact collaboration with Think-Film.

The Golden Globes launched this prize at Cannes earlier this year, where Eugene Jarecki received the honour for The Six Billion Dollar Man, his documentary on Julian Assange. At Venice, the award will build on Think-Film’s established presence, following two years of presenting the Collateral Impact Award for social impact potential.
