Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event (20-21 November) will present 18 new film projects at its Works in Progress showcase, where movies currently in production or post-production will be seeking sales agents and festival premieres. The line-up is divided into Baltic Event Works in Progress, International Works in Progress and Just Film Works in Progress, highlighting both established filmmakers and bold new talents. Screenings will take place at the Apollo Plaza cinemas in Tallinn.

This year’s selection maintains the programme’s strong international scope, featuring projects from over 15 countries. Triin Tramberg, project manager of International Works in Progress, noted that the section attracted a record number of submissions, with 80 films applying. “We’re thrilled with the diversity of the selected projects. It was important for us to include films from Ukraine, both to showcase their incredible resilience and to support filmmakers creating under extremely challenging circumstances,” she said.

The International Works in Progress section features eight films spanning Europe, the Mediterranean and Latin America. Among them are two from the festival’s focus region of Catalonia. Salen Las Lobas, the debut feature by Claudia Estrada Tarascó, follows a misunderstood teenager plotting her escape from a juvenile detention centre. The other Catalan entry, The Convulsions, the third feature by David Gutiérrez Camps, is a psychological drama exploring identity and emotional collapse.

Rahma is the latest work by Turkish poet and filmmaker Faysal Soysal, while Germany is represented by Superbuhei (see the news), a visually striking dark comedy marking the directorial debut by acclaimed production designer Josef Brandl (The Grand Budapest Hotel [+lee también:

The selection also includes two Ukrainian projects: Kira’s Dream, a musical drama by Denys Kolesnikov, and Crickets Sing in the Rye, Yevhen Khvorostianko’s historical drama set during the Holodomor. Meanwhile, Happiness Is Just a Blue Couch Away is a family drama by Montenegro’s Andrija Mugoša.

The Baltic Event Works in Progress section will showcase six features from the region, highlighting both emerging and established filmmakers. Helen Räim, the project manager of Baltic Event Works in Progress, emphasised the satisfaction of seeing projects evolve within the platform: “It’s really rewarding to support films from development through to production and now see them take shape in Works in Progress.”

Latvian director Kristians Riekstiņš presents his first feature, Kingpins, a crime-comedy that was named Most Promising Project in the 2024 Script Pool competition. Fellow Latvian filmmaker Marta Elīna Martinsone joins with The Wedding Day, a musical dramedy about a struggling actress rediscovering her creative spark. Lithuanian auteur Kristijonas Vildžiūnas returns with the fantasy-drama Dice-ching-o-mat (see the news), while Mo Hunt by Estonian director Eeva Mägi continues the “Mo” cinematic movement  – a new wave in Estonian cinema known for its rebellious spirit. Lex Julia by Laura Hyppönen explores the unravelling of a seemingly idyllic island holiday, and Something Real, a thriller by Estonian newcomer Evar Anvelt, rounds off the selection.

The Just Film Works in Progress strand presents four projects for younger audiences, blending fantasy, realism and coming-of-age themes. Kärt Väinola, project manager of Just Film Works in Progress, noted, “Many of the selected films focus on resilience – they’re about young protagonists facing loss, change or societal pressures while finding their own way forwards.”

The selection includes Tanit, a Catalan children’s drama by Pep Garrido, about a young girl apprenticed to a witch, and Suiza by Maria Fernanda Gonzales. Ukrainian filmmaker Dmytro Avdieiev presents Office of Magical Forces, a family adventure intertwining Kyiv’s urban life with ancient folklore, while Morten by Ivan Pavljutshkov tells a bittersweet story of youth and first love.

The awards for Works in Progress include two €7,000 prizes – comprising €6,000 worth of post-production services from Studio Beep and a €1,000 travel allowance – for the best projects in the Baltic and International sections. On the other hand, the Just Film Works in Progress winner will receive a €1,000 promotion grant, while TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) will present a special €5,000 award to one outstanding project from across all categories.
