The writers’ room initiative Words Across Europe invites emerging and established screenwriters from all over the continent to submit their stories for the 2026 edition. The programme opens its new call for projects to coincide with its presence at Content London, and aims to welcome a fresh group of participants who wish to take their ideas further within a collaborative and creatively charged environment.
Following an energetic 2025 edition that brought together writers, mentors and industry partners such as the BBC, Warner Bros and ZDF Studios, the organisers now look forward to discovering new voices and original narratives. Last year’s VR rooms explored a wide spectrum of ideas, from Berlin cannabis clubs to a ghost solving crimes in the west of Ireland to a forbidden romance between a Spanish nun and a French soldier during the Spanish Civil War. This variety underlined the scope of the initiative, which supports every genre and every style.
The programme offered participants a rare opportunity to sharpen their scripts while receiving feedback from peers and professionals. Several writers noted the momentum that the workshops provided. One of the three projects developed during the 2025 edition has already entered early talks with major European production companies, a promising indicator that the work created inside the room can resonate widely.
For many participants, the sense of community proved vital. Writer Mitra Kohnesheen from the Netherlands described the experience: “It's like going back to school; I was completely immersed in writing and surrounded by like-minded peers. It's such a relief to know there are others in the same boat and a screenwriting career is not as hopeless as it appears.”
Applications for the 2026 edition are open from today, 1 December. At Content London, the organisers will meet writers in person, present details about the programme and answer questions from those interested in taking part. The initiative welcomes screenwriters at any stage of their careers, offering a structured space to develop ideas, meet collaborators and gain access to a growing professional network. Participants benefit not only from creative guidance, but also from meaningful connections with industry figures who can support future development.
Writers who are ready to explore new creative directions or who have a story ready to grow will find Words Across Europe to be a crucial, dedicated space to advance their projects. More information is available here.
