Shooting has kicked off on What Lies Between Us, the new drama by Danish filmmaker Amalie Næsby Fick. The film is penned by Sara Isabella Jønsson and veteran screenwriter Nikolaj Arcel. The main cast features Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, Westworld), Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing, The Last Viking) and Asta Kamma August (The Kingdom, Families Like Ours).

Set in a quiet, suburban community, the 90-minute drama follows successful real-estate agent Anne Sofie (played by Knudsen), whose world is upended after the alleged sexual assault of a teenage boy by two peers. When she discovers that her own son may be more deeply involved than she imagined, Anne Sofie becomes determined to protect him and safeguard the family’s reputation.

As accusations spread across the town, she finds herself at odds with the other boys’ mothers, Sarah (Gråbøl) and Ulrikke (August). Under mounting pressure, she shifts the blame onto one of the other boys – a decision that fractures her relationships and sends her into a moral spiral, ultimately forcing her to make a life-altering choice.

Previously, Næsby Fick has showcased her versatility across both series and features, with credits including The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear, Sex and Baby Fever. What Lies Between Us marks her entry into a more psychological, character-driven dramatic register, a shift she has said she is eager to explore.

As one of Denmark’s most seasoned screenwriters, Arcel brings extensive experience from films such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, A Royal Affair, The Promised Land and several instalments of the Department Q franchise. He co-writes What Lies Between Us with Jønsson, whose recent projects include Unruly and Copenhagen Cowboy.

What Lies Between Us is being produced by Louise Vesth for Zentropa Entertainments ApS in co-production with Zentropa Sweden, Topkapi Films and Film i Väst. The €4.5 million pic is backed by the Danish Film Institute Market Scheme and the Netherlands Film Fund, and made in co-operation with DR – Danish Broadcasting Corporation, SVT, September Film and Nordisk Film Distribution A/S. The project is also co-funded by the European Union.

Its international sales are being handled by TrustNordisk. A Danish release is planned for 2026.
