Vincenzo Marra is trying his hand at comedy for the very first time with Era, his new film set in Naples and now in post-production. Marra’s compelling debut, Sailing Home, won 18 international awards, including Best Film in Venice’s Critics’ Week in 2001. After making two documentaries, in 2004 he wrote and directed his second feature, Vento di terra [+lee también:

Era tells the story of an elderly yet lively and super active Neapolitan widow called Lina (Dalia Frediani) who runs a Catholic association for bourgeois old ladies and looks after her sister and her hopelessly immature nephew, but, over and above all that, she primarily still plays old-school mum to her three sixty-something children who are in constant crisis (played by Giovanni Esposito, seen in Zamora [+lee también:

). Lina also has a suitor, her neighbour of indeterminate age called Don Eduardo (Antonio Venturini). After a health scare, Lina has to choose between going into a nursing home or relying on a caregiver. After a thorough series of interviews, a fifty-something Sri Lankan woman called Amilà (Marinì Fernando) is chosen. Despite the Sri Lankan community’s long-standing presence and integration in Naples, Amilà doesn’t speak Italian, and her relationship with Lina struggles to get off the ground amidst feelings of distrust.

The film’s cinematography is by Gianluca Laudadio while editing is by Luca Benedetti, both of whom collaborate frequently with Marra, as does Flaviano Barbarisi, in charge of production design, and Pasquale Catalano, who’s composing the score. Costumes come courtesy of Rossella Aprea.

“I think it’s a highly original story which addresses important themes such as ageing and integration in an entertaining way,” the director enthused. “Naples continues to attract a great deal of attention and I’m sure that this story - which has important things to say, and which expresses itself through humble and light-hearted comedy – is bound to leave a lasting impression. And at this difficult point in time when it’s hard to talk about the present, Era is an excellent opportunity, given its light-hearted tone, to get to grips with what’s going on around us on a daily basis. Our humble ambition was always to bring Eduardo De Filippo “back to life” a little. And the French film The Intouchables was a modern point of reference for us.”

Era is being produced by Francesco and Federico Scardamaglia for Compagnia Leone Cinematografica in association with RAI Cinema and with the support of the Italian Ministry for Culture and the Film Commission Regione Campania. Compagnia Leone Cinematografica will release the movie in Italian cinemas towards the end of March 2026.
