The 83rd Venice Film Festival has revealed the recipients of this year’s parallel awards. As per tradition, these accolades are independently decided upon by associations of film critics, cultural institutions, cinema clubs and professional guilds.
One of the key honours – the International Critics' Prize (FIPRESCI Prize) – went to Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love, which was crowned Best Film in Competition. Meanwhile, the FIPRESCI Award for a title screened in Orizzonti went to Xavier Tera’s The Color of the Sun, a Canadian-Italian-Japanese co-production.
Hirokazu Koreeda’s Look Back emerged as one of the most decorated films in this year’s side awards. The Japanese filmmaker’s latest work shared the Cinema & Arts Award for Best Film with Takashi Miike’s Shumei: The Living Legacy of Kabuki, while also picking up the CinemaSarà Award, the SIGNIS Award and the UNIMED Award. It additionally received a Special Mention from the Fanheart3 jury.
Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s Naza also attracted considerable attention from the collateral juries. The documentary received the Edipo Re Award presented by the Ca’ Foscari student jury, shared the Green Drop Award with Paolo Strippoli’s The Spiral, earned the Sorriso Diverso Venezia Award for Best Director Under 35 and received the Cinema for UNICEF Mention attached to the Leoncino d’Oro.
Stéphane Brizé’s A Good Little Soldier was another multiple winner. The French competition title received the Premio Speciale Film Impresa, the Interfilm Award for Promoting Interreligious Dialogue and the Sorriso Diverso Venezia Award for Best Foreign Film. Edoardo De Angelis’s The Fire Within You likewise collected several honours: the BookCiak Award, the Soundtrack Stars Award for La Niña and Alfredo Maddaluno’s score, and the Pasinetti Award for Best Actress for Vanessa Scalera.
Elsewhere, Possible Love added the Arca CinemaGiovani Award for Best Film of Venezia 83 to its FIPRESCI victory, while The Spiral was named Best Italian Film by the same jury in addition to sharing the Green Drop Award. Cédric Kahn’s A Place to Heal won both the Italian Red Cross Award and the Lanterna Magica Award, while Nicola Sorcinelli’s Balcanica landed the Carlo Lizzani Award. The latter had also previously won the Giornate degli Autori People’s Choice Award.
The Francesco Pasinetti Award for Best Film went to Marco Bechis’s Back to Buenos Aires, whose lead Adriano Giannini was also named Best Actor. Alina Marazzi’s The Girl with the Leica received the Pasinetti Special Prize, in addition to winning the 1964 Pop Art Award. Meanwhile, the Leoncino d’Oro went to Shinya Tsukamoto’s Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?
Finally, the Queer Lion was jointly awarded to Theo Rollason’s Queer Edward II, and Victor Di Marco and Márcio Picoli’s London.
