Kicking off on 14 September, the shoot for If Love Should Die by France’s Mia Hansen-Løve will run until mid-December in Norway, Sweden, France, Ireland and Spain. For the record, this is the director’s ninth feature film (and her second in English) after All is Forgiven (screened in the Directors’ Fortnight), Father of My Children (awarded the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize), Goodbye First Love (which won a Special Mention in Locarno), Things to Come (scooping a Silver Bear for Best Director in Berlin), Bergman Island (in competition in Cannes) and One Fine Morning (selected for the Directors’ Fortnight).

The cast features Norwegian star Renate Reinsve (named Best Actress in Cannes for The Worst Person in the World, nominated for the Best Actress Oscar via Sentimental Value and much acclaimed this year in Fjord), Johnny Flynn (who impressed in Toronto last week by way of Elsinore and The Idiot(s), and more recently in the Ripley series), Irish actor Charlie Kelly (of the Bodkin series), Englishman Will Keen (who made a splash in The Wizard of the Kremlin last year), fellow Englishman Tom Sturridge (whose credits include the series The Sandman and who was seen in this year’s Cannes Film Festival in The Man I Love), young French actress Jane Beever (who broke through in Goodbye Cruel World) and renowned Luxembourger actress Vicky Krieps (known for Phantom Thread and Corsage, and who’s reuniting with Hansen-Løve after Bergman Island).

Written by the director, the screenplay retraces the remarkable final 12 years in the life of 18th century English writer, philosopher and women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft. We’re in England on the eve of the French Revolution. A poor, young, solitary woman is carving out a path for herself, living by the ideals of the Enlightenment. Dismissed from her post as a governess, she resolves to live by her pen, against all odds. At 33, she publishes her inflammatory masterpiece, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Months later, she sets sail for France, arriving in Paris at the height of the Terror.

If Love Should Die is produced by David Thion for the Paris-based company Les Films Pelléas (with Philippe Martin as associate producer) together with Irish outfit Wildcard (Patrick O’Neill and Conor Barry), Spain’s Elastica Films (María Zamora), Norway’s Mer Film (Maria Ekerhovd) and UK companies Intake Films (BriaJoshua Horsfield and Saskia Duff) and Caspian Films (Thembisa Cochrane and Georgie Paget), in co-production with Arte France Cinéma, Swedish firms Kjellson and Wik and Film i Väst and German companies The Match Factory, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Arte Allemagne (via the Grand Accord). The film’s financial co-production partners are RT Features, Anonymous Content, Leone Film Group, Artists Haven and Nightjar Films, while MUBI supported the movie’s in development.

Pre-purchased by Arte France and Arte Allemagne, Canal+, Ciné+ OCS, Filmin and HBO Spain, the feature film also benefits from the support of Eurimages, the Norwegian Film Institute, Screen Ireland, the ICAA, the UK Global Screen Fund (BFI and National Lottery), the Île-de-France and Normandy regions, Mediafondet Zefyr and the Vestnorsk Filmsenter.

Cinematography is by French DoP Claire Mathon (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Saint Omer), with Romanian Tudor Panduru (Cristian Mungiu’s faithful collaborator) handling shooting in Scandinavia. International sales are overseen by Goodfellas, with distribution coming courtesy of Les Films du Losange in France, Elastica Distribution in Spain and Leone Distribution in Italy.
