The Arras Film Festival (headed up by Nadia Paschetto and Éric Miot) has revealed the identities of the nine features (as yet unreleased in France) that will vie for the Golden Atlas, to be handed out at the closing of the event’s 27th edition (6-15 November). The jury will be chaired by French filmmaker David Oelhoffen (Far from Men, Close Enemies, In Your Wake), flanked by Nastya Golubeva, Éric Caravaca, Grégoire Colin and Laurence Arné.
Dedicated to European cinema, the competition will notably showcase two Scandinavian titles: Brace Your Heart by Sweden’s Amanda Kernell (which won a Special Mention in Toronto’s Platform competition and the Best Director Award at San Sebastián) and The Guest by Denmark’s Mads Mengel (Special Jury Prize and Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary).
Two other films first discovered in competition at Karlovy Vary will also be in the mix: Black Money for White Nights by Bulgarian duo Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (previously victorious at Arras with Glory and The Father), and Only Beautiful Things to Look At by Slovakia’s Ivan Ostrochovsky.
Also featuring in the line-up are How to Divorce During the War by Lithuanian helmer Andrius Blazevicius (Best Director Award at Sundance, in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition), Stand Up by Dutch filmmaker Mari Sanders (unveiled in the international competition at Tribeca), Feels Like Home by Hungary’s Gábor Holtai (Silver Méliès for Best Fantastic Feature at Sitges), Mila/Marija by Austria’s Andrina Mračnikar (Audience Award at Zurich) and Our Revolution by Poland’s Piotr Domalewski (recently nominated for the Golden Lions for Best Polish Film of the Year and the latest feature from a filmmaker already popular in competition at Arras with I Never Cry and The Altar Boys).
The remainder of the extensive programme of the 27th Arras Film Festival (whose guest of honour will be director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who will release Violette in French cinemas on 9 December) will be detailed at a later date.
