Principal photography for Where You Come From took place during April and June of this year between Germany and Croatia. The film, currently in post-production, is Clara Zoë My-Linh von Arnim’s debut feature. After studying at the DFFB in Berlin, she directed and wrote several short films and series, including the web series Druck, which she wrote, and the TV series Die Zweiflers as well as Mozart/Mozart, which she both directed – the former even earning her a nomination for Best Director at the German Television Awards. Where You Come From is scheduled to be released in spring 2027.
The film, billed as “a tragicomic story about past and present, memory and forgetting, the impossibility of ever truly arriving and the first and most decisive coincidence in our biography – our origin,” is an adaptation of German-Bosnian author Saša Stanišić‘s acclaimed 2019 novel Herkunft (lit. “Origins”). The book was turned into a screenplay by Senad Halilbašić, an author of Bosnian and Austrian origin who also works as a film producer and screenwriter and has collaborated with several filmmakers, including Patrick Vollrath on the thriller 7500 (amongst other films), for which he received the Austrian Film Award for Best Screenplay.
The story contains autobiographical elements. In it, a writer goes back to his native Bosnia and Herzegovina with the intention of taking his grandmother to a nursing home. When they set off together, at first, the elderly lady thinks her grandchild is driving her back to the village where she grew up. During their road trip, each of them is confronted with various memories from their past, some of them closely linked with the history of their country, but despite the emotionally demanding topics the film deals with, it also uses humour to balance its tone.
The international cast of the drama includes German-Croatian actor Slavko Popadić (Berlin ER), Bosnian actress Gordana Boban (Cold November), Croatian actress Marija Škaričić (Small Things), German-Croatian actor Carlo Ljubek (Every You Every Me), the young Arsseni Bultmann (When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before) and Maro Lovrić. Jieun Yi (Berlin ER, Sun and Concrete) is responsible for the film’s cinematography, with editing by Simon Gstöttmayr (Long Story Short). Nearly everyone from the cast and crew has a personal link to the project’s primary topics of identity and migration and is used to navigating between different cultures and languages.
Where You Come From is produced by UFA Fiction in collaboration with Leonine Studios and broadcaster ARD Degeto Film, with financing from Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, MFG, the FFA Filmförderungsanstalt, the DFFF Deutscher Filmförderfonds and the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM). Leonine Studios is planning to release it in German theatres on 4 March 2027.
