OUR FATHER

by Mahamat-Saleh Haroum

synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Tahir and eight-year-old Amine awake one morning to discover that their father is gone, but they have no idea why. They decide to look for him in every place he used to frequent. As time goes on they begin to ditch school and just wander around. One evening they go to the movies and think they see their father on the silver screen. The only way to get him back is to steal the film. Their desperate and apathetic mother no longer has the strength to raise them and decides to send them to an educational institute. Tahir and Amine stick together and try to stand up not only to the inhospitable institute and severity of its instructors, but also to the fact that their days of carefree childhood are gone forever. For Tahir, life in the institute becomes a sad and premature gateway into adulthood.
