In 2004, Silje Hopland Eik set up Cinenord with her friend from the Norwegian National Film School, Tanya Badendyck. Their company has four production arms: Cinenord Spillefilm in Norway, Cinenord Kidstory, Cinenord Stockholm and CineMiso, recently set up with Denmark’s Miso Film to produce six Varg Veum films.

Cineuropa: Is it strange for you to be selected as Norway’s Producer on the Move, without Tanya, your partner in Cinenord?
Silje Hopland Eik: Yes, definitely, because we always work as a team on all our projects and films. This is our strength. We drew lots on which of our names would appear for Producers on the Move and I got lucky. Tanya will certainly be a part of the Producers on the Move programme though.
What drives you as a producer: the story, the relationship with the filmmaker, getting people together around one project?
All of these! The variety of tasks is one thing I cherish very much. As a producer you get to be a part of many different and exciting processes. You are the only one who is part of all entire process, before and after the film reaches an audience.
Your company has expanded rapidly in four years, with four distinct production divisions in Norway and Sweden. You are obviously very aware of branding and spreading your wings across the Nordic region.
It’s true, Cinenord has grown rapidly. Our strategy is to create a broad platform from which the company can rise. We want people to know our profile, and also to remind ourselves of our focus. That way it´s easier for us to choose incoming projects.
What projects do you currently have in production and development?
We are at the moment in pre-production with Vegas, a touching story about a friendship between three teenagers who meet at a community home. Gunnar Vikene wrote the screenplay and will also direct. Vegas is an emotional and brutal portrait of how teenagers struggle to find a home, love and acceptance in their lives. Gunnar Vikene is well known for his warm, strong and humorous stories and this one will be no exception.
You have a brand new Norwegian Film Institute. Is it exciting to be part of this new era of Norwegian cinema?
Yes, absolutely. I just hope that the new organization will fall quickly into place so that their focus will be on films, not everything else....
