Continuing its active presence at the leading film festivals, Turin-based sales agent The Open Reel is bringing two films to the 66th San Sebastián International Film Festival, which begins on 21 September and runs until 29 September.

To start off with, the sophomore feature Figures, by Barcelona-based Argentinian filmmaker Eugenio Canevari, will have its world premiere in Horizontes Latinos. Directed, written and produced by Canevari, the film follows Stella, an Argentinian immigrant in Barcelona, who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Always by her side is her ever-loving partner, Paco, who, despite his own problems with alcoholism, wants to support her every step of the way. Valeria, Stella’s daughter, also manages her day-to-day care while witnessing the deterioration of her mother’s condition. They try to survive as best they can while they await an imminent answer on whether they will be allowed into subsidised housing.

. The film, which had its world premiere in Berlinale’s Panorama, will be screened in the Made in Spain section of San Sebastián. Shot in Galicia and teetering between fiction and documentary, Thirty Souls focuses on 12-year-old Alba, who wants to discover the mysterious, fascinating and unknown reality of death. Accompanied by her best friend, Samuel, she explores abandoned houses, travels through forgotten villages and discovers remote mountains that harbour a parallel world. Their journey will reveal the conflict between the living and the dead.

Toucedo participated in the 2010 edition of San Sebastián with All Night Long, directed by Isaki Lacuesta, on which she worked as an editor. As a director, she’s better known for her documentary experience, and her debut was In All Hands. Since its premiere, Thirty Souls has been screened at multiple international and Spanish film festivals. The movie was co-produced by Lasoga FilmsDiana Toucedo Films and TVG Televisión de Galicia. At present, Toucedo is developing her next project, Puerto Deseado, which will be shot in Argentina.
