Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s latest feature, Three Faces, was the winner of the Best Film Award at the 55th International Antalya Film Festival, which ran from 29 September-5 October. The closing ceremony took place on Friday at Antalya’s Glass Pyramid.

The international jury, headed up by last year’s Antalya winner, Chinese director Vivian Qu, and comprising Romanian director Cãlin Peter Netzer, Italian novelist-scriptwriter Maurizio Braucci, CEO of the Doha Film Institute Fatma Al Remaihi and Turkish actress Tuba Ünsal, handed the 320,000 Turkish lira (€45,000) prize to Three Faces’ leading actress Behnaz Jafari, as Panahi has not been allowed to travel outside Iran for the past eight years.

This year’s Palme d'Or winner, the Japanese film Shoplifters, received the Best Director Award for Hirokazu Kore-eda, and the 155,000 lira (€22,000) prize was picked up by the movie's lead actor, Lily Franky. The acting awards also went to Cannes winners, with Best Actor being handed to Syrian refugee boy Zain Al Rafeea, who stars in Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum [+lire aussi :

, which also received the Youth Jury Award. Best Actress was bestowed upon Kazakh star Samal Yeslyamova for her portrayal of the title character in Ayka [+lire aussi :

Turkish cinematographer Olcay Oğuz received the Behlül Dal Award for Emerging Turkish Talent for his work “with such delicacy and taste in difficult conditions”, for Mustafa Karadeniz’s Planetree, which had its world premiere at Antalya. The audience plumped for Birds of Passage [+lire aussi :

 by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra as its favourite, and thus the movie scooped the 60,000 lira (€8,500) Audience Award.

Finally, Turkish comedian Cem Yılmaz was crowned with the Honorary Orange Lifetime Achievement Award, while American actor Eric Roberts and acclaimed Arabesque singer and actor İbrahim Tatlıses received Antalya’s Honorary Awards.

Mike Downey, artistic director of the International Antalya Film Festival, stated: “I am delighted that such a high-level jury has chosen to honour a number of very important works of art which are underpinned by a profound sense of morality and social justice. The prizes reflect some of the key issues facing the world today in works by some of the very best practitioners of cinematic art from across the globe.”
