, in competition at Venice Film Festival and awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Elena Cotta’s performance. Filming is due to take place in the Sicilian capital for six weeks.

The film is based on an eponymous piece of theatre written by the controversial and admired director, playwright and actress. The screenplay was written by Emma Dante with Elena Stancanelli and Giorgio Vasta and focuses on a matriarchal family of five sisters, Maria, Pinuccia, Lia, Katia and Antonella. We follow the family, born and raised in an apartment on the top floor of a building on the outskirts of Palermo, through childhood, adulthood and into old age. A home that bears the marks of time passing, just like the very family that grew up and still live there. This is the story of five women, a family, of those who leave, of those who remain and of those who resist.
