15 titles have been selected by Focus Asia, the Far East Film Festival’s Project Market dedicated to “films of tomorrow”. These works boasting strong co-production and co-financing potential in Europe or in Asia will be presented to over 200 sector professionals during FEFF 21 - unfolding 30 April to 2 May - as part of a rich programme which comes complete with panels, one-to-one meetings, screenings and networking opportunities. As an exclusive and strategic vantage point from which to observe the latest cinematic trends and styles, as well as a general overview of the film market in the Orient, the Far East Film Festival 21 will tap into last season’s best Asian productions (76 titles from 12 countries in all). This year’s highlights include the world premiere of Birthday and the presence of three amazing guests: the legendary Hong Kong director Anthony Wong, the stunning activist-diva Yao Chen and, of course, Her Majesty Jeon Do-yeon, the greatest Korean actress of all time.

Also taking place from 29 April to 3 May is the Italian instalment of “Ties That Bind”, the Asian-European co-production workshop which enters into its eleventh edition this year and which brings together Asian and European professionals for the development of film projects (under the guidance of highly qualified experts in the sector who hail from both continents). The projects selected for the workshop will form their own collateral market section and their creators will have the opportunity to meet the many producers, funders and distributors attending Focus Asia. “Ties That Bind” is organised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund, EAVE, the Udine Far East Film Festival and the Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA), with the support of the European Union sub-programme Creative Europe – MEDIA, Silver Media Group and Aurora Media Holdings.

The European Film Promotion (EFP) announced today that its cooperation with the Far East Film Festival will now extend to include European sales firms with a worldwide reach. In addition to the six ex Producers on the Move who will participate in Focus Asia (Katrin Kissa - Homeless Bob Production, Estonia; Dalma Hidasi - Extreme Film Ltd, Hungary; Giorgia Priolo - Effetti Digitali, Italy; Bostjan Ikovic - Arsmedia, Slovenia; Svetozar Ristovski - Small Moves Films, the Republic of North Macedonia; Ieva Norviliene - UAB Tremora, Lithuania), ten sales companies associated with the EFP will be taking part in the “Get Ready for Cannes” programme and will be given the opportunity to present their line-ups to buyers and distributors hailing from China, Hong Kong, South Korea and other Asian countries. The former include Level K (Denmark), Reel Suspects (France), Heretic Outreach (Greece), Stray Dogs (France), Urban Distribution International (France), Wild Bunch (France), Intramovies (Italy), True Colours (Italy), New Europe Film Sales (Poland) and Jinga Films (UK). As Ioanna Stais of Heretic Outreach remarked: “It is a great opportunity to raise the visibility of our projects and expand our network, getting targeted attention from the several Asian buyers attending the event, just a few days before the frenzied Cannes agenda”.

And finally, another date for the diary is Co-Production Day, opening on Wednesday 1st May. This large-scale gathering will bring together filmmakers and producers, both European and Asian, so as to analyse potential projects and possible developments relating to the Italy/China co-production agreement signed in 2018.
