With almost all films at the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival, as well as talks and master classes, available to stream for free in all Nordic countries, the 31st edition of the event (nicknamed, rather lovingly, “the films-from-your-couch edition”) got going today, 17 September. With, as advertised by the organisers, “a magical online Opening Night” and showings of the already quite beloved Finnish documentary Lady Time [+lire aussi :

Lady Time is an unassuming, but very precious, gem! With mathematical precision, the use of great cinematic tools, and with a unique and genuine interest, Elina Talvensaari effectively and movingly connects a past life with the present,” said Martijn te Pas and Cecilia Lidin, programmers for the documentary section of the festival, while the director pointed out: “It makes me so glad that a story of an unknown, ordinary woman gets to be chosen to open the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival. The world is full of stories of oh-so-important men and their extraordinary thoughts and feelings, and I think this is a sign, among many others, that the world is changing.” Niki Lindroth von Bahr, who will also enjoy a retrospective of her work at the gathering, added: “I wrote the script when I was on maternity leave with my newborn baby. It became a sort of apocalyptic lullaby that came to me in the strange, half-awake state that I was in.”

Out of the 541 films submitted, 67 were selected to compete for the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival awards in four competition programmes, including the likes of All That I Am [+lire aussi :

“It is no secret that our industry is facing unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic while support for arts and culture is diminishing. We feel it is important to continue all of the events we would normally hold to support filmmakers and the film industry – though in a new, virtual way,” observed executive director Anita Reher. “We are thrilled that the digital festival will expand the filmmakers’ reach and let people – from Akureyri, Iceland, to Turku, Finland, and everywhere in between – experience the special feeling that attending the event offers. It’s our hope that by enabling a wider audience to engage with these films, more will be inspired by these Nordic storytellers!”

The Nordisk Panorama Film Festival will end on 27 September, with the Nordisk Panorama Market taking place from 17-23 September and the Nordisk Panorama Forum from 18-23 September. You can find the full line-up here.
