The Málaga Film Festival has just opened the call for applications for the fourth edition of its MAFF (Málaga Festival Fund & Co-production Event), a strand that forms part of the MAFIZ (Málaga Festival Industry Zone) industry area and which, in its determination to never cease growing or evolving, is incorporating Portuguese and Spanish projects into this edition, as well as those hailing from Latin America. In this way, the event aims to cement its commitment to the Ibero-American audiovisual industry, and is undergoing a revamp in order to continue fostering the projects being made by filmmakers from Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

The fourth edition of MAFF will unspool on 9, 10 and 11 June, as an integral part of the 24th edition of the festival, and the projects selected by a committee of experts will thus get to take part in these industry days. Registration and submission of the projects is already possible, and the submission period will be open until 5 March 2021 – click here for more information. The identities of the projects picked will be made public at the end of March.

MAFF is intended as a space for communication – a co-production-orientated meeting point and market that facilitates dialogue between film producers. This gathering, which will bring together financiers of international co-productions in the city of Málaga, aspires to be the leading communication and networking platform, which will allow projects in development on both sides of the Atlantic to be disclosed publicly, in their initial stages. The event also aims to promote innovation in the business and production models for new features, facilitating their subsequent distribution and market launch; it will provide high-quality creative, economic and financial advice to foster projects and facilitate their placement in the global market, thus contributing to generating international appeal; and it will invite the new players in the audiovisual industry to take part in its platform in order to create content that is more in line with new audiences.

The projects selected for MAFF 2021 will benefit from a two-month grant for learning and training in the areas of creation and production, and they will also be vying for the following prizes: the Bolivia Lab Industry Award (involving taking part in the production lab that will be held in July 2021); Cinema 226 Award (script doctoring, and consultancy for funding, casting and the editing of a teaser); FIDBA Award (partaking in the production tutoring sessions that will take place in September 2021); Film Market Hub, which will grant the projects one year’s free subscription to its online market; SANFIC (Santiago International Film Festival) Industry Award (taking part in its production lab, set to unspool in Chile in August); and the DOK Leipzig Award, entailing attendance at its co-production forum (December 2021).

MAFF is organised by Málaga City Council and the Málaga Film Festival, in conjunction with the ICAA (Spanish Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute)CAACI (Conference of Ibero-American Audiovisual and Cinematograpic Authorities), IBERMEDIA, FIPCA (Ibero-American Federation of Cinematographic and Audiovisual Producers) and EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs).
