Set in an imaginary modern-day Spain, a divided country on the brink of political chaos, its main character is Antonia (played by Velilla), a young investigative journalist who, by chance, stumbles upon a conspiracy that was cooked up decades ago: she learns of the existence of a cryogenically frozen super-agent, García (Ortiz), who was created in a laboratory in the 1950s by Franco’s secret services. He’s a perfect soldier with superhuman strength, programmed to obey orders without ever questioning them, and the woman has just woken him up after six decades on ice. However, García feels disorientated and confused in a Spain he discovers has changed completely. The old world clashes with the new, while they both learn to work together when they become embroiled in a political conspiracy that threatens to bring democracy tumbling down in favour of a new dictatorship.

“When I read the script for the first episode of ¡García!, I really enjoyed spotting so many elements that I have always liked among its various ingredients, but it was the sense of freshness exuded by the combination of the various reference points and the feeling of not having read anything like it before that won me over completely,” states Eugenio Mira, who has previously directed suspense films of the likes of Grand Piano [+lire aussi :

. “Being able to play with such original material, with a universe this rich and a group of characters that never stop growing, while they simultaneously try to make sense of the constant twists, turns and revelations enveloping the plot, is a huge technical and artistic challenge… And an enormous privilege.”

“This is an immensely ambitious project on the narrative and visual levels. It’s been meticulously designed right down to the smallest detail to be an entertaining series, full of action and adventure, at times fully respecting the genre tradition but at others blowing it to smithereens. With this show, we’re going to enjoy a story brimming with surprises, where we will see that many things in our country have changed over the last few decades, but there are other things that haven’t moved forward at all,” explains Miguel Salvat, who is serving as an executive producer of the series, together with Steve Matthews and Antony Root.

In the words of Antonio Asensio, president of Zeta Studios, “¡García! is one of our biggest investments; it’s a very ambitious project that poses a sizeable challenge in terms of production but which we are thrilled about starting to bring to fruition. We are sure that doing so alongside HBO, one of the most important companies, which is a benchmark in the sector, will mark the start of a fruitful period of collaboration between us.”

¡García! is being produced by Zeta Studios for WarnerMedia in Spain and will be released on HBO Max in 2022.
