The international jury of the Krakow Film Festival (30 May-6 June), headed up by Mark Cousins, explained that Far Eastern Golgotha director Julia Sergina proved to be a mature talent in telling a story of “a socially desperate but charismatic man using disobedience to fight for democracy”. In Eastern Europe, that battle is more important than ever, and takes different forms in countries like Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Russia. Sergina’s film received the gathering’s top prize, called the Golden Horn, while the runners-up clutching the Silver Horns were Oan Kim and Brigitte Bouillot for The Man Who Paints Water Drops (France/South Korea), for a Film With High Artistic Values, and Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh for Writing with Fire (India), for a Film Presenting Social Issues. Two Special Mentions were bestowed upon Inside the Red Brick Wall by Hong Kong Documentary Filmmakers (Hong Kong) and North by Current by Angelo Madsen Minax (USA), while the FIPRESCI jury rewarded Children of the Enemy [+lire aussi :

The ghosts of a horrific past that are still present today were evoked by the National Competition winner, Walk with Angels, helmed by Tomasz Wysokiński, who spent one year filming a South African man during his search for missing children. The movie shows that the country’s bloody history and the horrors of the Apartheid regime clearly still have an impact on people’s spirits and identity. Walk with Angels thus won the Golden Hobby-Horse for the Director of the Best Film, funded by the president of the Polish Filmmakers Association, while composer Paweł Mykietyn picked up a Special Mention for his haunting musical score.
