On 21 and 22 October, the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre will play host to the Shooting Locations Marketplace, an event aimed at audiovisual industry professionals and representatives of destinations being touted as shooting locations for film, television and advertising productions, among others. Nearly 50 location managers and more than 30 national and international locations have already confirmed that they will be taking part (see the news). The Shooting Locations Marketplace is an initiative developed by the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre in conjunction with the Spain Film Commission, with support from Valladolid City Council, Castile and León Council, Valladolid Provincial Council, the Chamber of Commerce and ICEX (the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade). The official presentation of the event took place in the Castilian city on Thursday 2 September.
The philosophy behind the Shooting Locations Marketplace is to offer key players involved in the development of audiovisual projects “a commercial and business-orientated platform, a professional work place that will contribute to promoting Spain as a destination for shoots and to strengthening this industry, which is witnessing a moment of growth and expansion,” explained the general manager of the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre, Alberto Alonso. This recruitment market has an international scope and already, at this first edition, will boast the involvement of attendees representing at least ten countries. The UK, Portugal and Brussels will be present through their respective film commissions, and 65% of the location managers who have signed up hail from the USA, the UK, Romania, Germany, Canada, Italy and Malta.
The common goal of the location managers who will be present in Valladolid in October is to familiarise themselves with new settings and get to know new representatives in order to add them to their professional agendas as potential destinations and partners for future projects. In addition, service companies that specialise in processing and dispensing advice on topics such as legislation, backing and so on will also be taking part.
The people who took part in the Shooting Locations Marketplace’s official presentation included the president of the Spain Film Commission, Carlos Rosado; the chair of the executive board of the Valladolid Trade Fair Centre, Víctor Caramanzana; the vice-president of Valladolid Provincial Council, Víctor Alonso Monge; the general manager of Cultural Policies at Castile and León Council, José Ramón González; and the mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente.
In his speech, Rosado pointed out that the Spain Film Commission has been working on the organisation of this first edition “with the aim of building an event of international relevance. This meeting point for the industry and for professionals from the sector aspires to contribute to giving the Spanish shooting industry a competitive edge.” Puente underlined the unique nature of the project and the fact that now is “the perfect moment for it to arrive, with the ‘Spain: Europe’s Audiovisual Hub’ plan (see the news), the increase in the number of shoots and the sheer demand for content”. González declared that the Shooting Locations Marketplace “constitutes a one-of-a-kind opportunity to convey to professionals from the location-scouting sector our country’s huge potential to host audiovisual productions”.
In addition to stressing the connection between this particular province and cinema, with festivals and activities such as the Medina del Campo International Film Week, the SEMINCI and Rueda con Rueda, Monge mentioned how shoots had enormous potential to generate economic dynamism. And lastly, Caramanzana made mention of the opportunity that the Shooting Locations Marketplace offers to companies and destinations “on account of its highly specialised nature and the international reach of this project without borders”.
