Preparations for the 12th edition of When East Meets West (WEMW) are in full swing – it is set to run from 24-28 January 2022, both in Trieste and online. WEMW has opened the call for the first edition of its Slate Market and for all of the side sections targeting feature-length fiction films and full-length documentaries in post-production. As a reminder, the call for the Co-Production Forum is already open (see the news).

For the WEMW Slate Market, a total of five companies that are developing a slate of audiovisual works will be selected. They will receive consultancy on how to build a successful company slate and on strategic company planning, and they will have business-to-business exchanges with key players from different industry sectors. The programme combines the EAVE group-work method with a series of plenary sessions and individual consultancies focusing on strategic company planning, potential risk evaluation and company diversification. The main goal is to define realistic short-, mid- and long-term strategies for their companies and to outline the next steps for each project included in their company slates. Selected teams will have tailor-made, curated meetings with a series of WEMW Business Angels, and will receive advice on co-production, financing, marketing and distribution, according to the primary needs of their projects and slates. The deadline is 30 November, and more info can be found here.

Last Stop Trieste (LST) is dedicated to documentaries currently at the final-cut stage and which have previously been presented at WEMW or at one of its partner events: Ex Oriente Film, Balkan Discoveries at the Balkan Documentary Centre, Docu Rough Cut Boutique at Sarajevo’s CineLink or the modules in Sofia, ZagrebDox PRO and the Baltic Sea Forum. The selected documentaries will be showcased to an exclusive panel of industry experts and decision makers, who will later offer online and on-site consultations and feedback. The deadline is 30 November, and more info can be found here.

This is IT is a specialised programme entirely dedicated to feature-length fiction and hybrid films with a strong visual and artistic approach. The projects should be produced or co-produced by Italian producers, while from this year onwards, films from the East and West 2022 spotlight territories (Russia, the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA) are also eligible and can be selected for the special This is NOW section. The teams will screen eight minutes of their post-production material (or, at least, partially shot material) to a panel of international guests, who will offer one-to-one meetings both in Trieste and online. The deadline is 30 November, and more info can be found here.

Projects in the editing phase may apply for the First Cut Lab Trieste consultancy programme. The eligible feature-length fiction films should come from one of the WEMW 2022 spotlight countries. During private sessions, three industry advisers and a consultant editor will watch a full rough cut of the selected films and will offer feedback. The deadline is 30 November, and more info can be found here.

Finally, eight projects that are now in post-production will be eligible to participate in the First Cut+ workshop on marketing and promotion. The programme will be divided into three important modules: master classes, specific consultations and a work-in-progress session. The deadline is 15 November, and more info can be found here.

In the coming weeks, WEMW will announce its Inspirational Labs and will unveil other initiatives included in the programme of the 2022 edition.

WEMW is organised by the FVG Audiovisual Fund in collaboration with the Trieste Film Festival, EAVE and Creative Europe Desk Italy, and is supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme, MIC - Direzione Generale per il Cinema, CEI – Central European Initiative, Film Center Serbia and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
