On Tuesday 1 March, BBC Studios and Sky Deutschland, one of Germany’s leading entertainment providers, sealed an output deal for factual content in Germany. The announcement was made during the British broadcaster’s annual Showcase event. In detail, the long-term partnership agreement will see Sky Deutschland become the pay-TV home for BBC Studios’ premium factual content in Germany, exclusively hosting over 150 hours of factual titles from the BBC Studios catalogue. In addition, factual output from BBC Studios can be seen on the Sky Nature and Sky Documentaries channels owned by Sky Deutschland, which launched in Germany last September. Some of the titles that form part of the deal include Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World, Louis Theroux: Shooting Joe Exotic, David Attenborough: The Sound of Nature and Primates.
This new, multi-year agreement is complementary to the strategic partnership that the British pubcaster has with Germany’s ZDF “to co-produce landmark factual shows, including the forthcoming Green Planet, presented by Sir David Attenborough, alongside co-developing scripted TV series”.
Commenting on the deal, Salim Mukaddam, senior vice-president, EMEA Content Sales, BBC Studios, said: “This new partnership provides Sky Deutschland with long-term access to our award-winning documentaries as the backbone of their new channels. Alongside our strategic partnership with ZDF, German audiences will now be able to access a broad range of the very best factual titles from BBC Studios. We are pleased to be strengthening our relationship with Sky and are excited to work together to bring success to the new Sky channels.”
Christian Asanger, vice-president Entertainment at Sky Deutschland, added: “Documentaries are one of the most popular programme genres and are also in great demand among our customers. We are pleased to complement our various entertainment offerings on our two channel brands Sky Nature and Sky Documentaries with outstanding BBC Studios productions next to the numerous exclusive Sky Originals.”
As a side note, new factual titles presented during the Showcase event included two landmark natural-history series, Frozen Planet II and Dynasties II, alongside the insightful documentaries Frida and Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America, and the premium science series Spectacular Earth.
