Cet article est disponible en anglais.

Although the first round of calls for projects in development and in progress for the upcoming When East Meets West (WEMW) is still open (see the news), the Italian co-production forum has already launched a second round of calls for the programmes that focus on boosting careers, accelerating strategic company development and reinforcing company sustainability. The 13th edition of WEMW will run from 22-25 January in Trieste.

Until 20 November, European producers have the chance to apply for the second edition of EAVE Slate, an innovative programme that will offer consultancy on how to build a successful company slate and provide strategic company planning to companies that are developing a slate of audiovisual works.

Also, until 20 November, producers from Europe, Canada and Latin America will be able to apply for one of the new Inspirational Labs, a series of mini-workshops meant to stimulate selected participants to develop new content and explore different business models. Run in collaboration with leading training programmes and international partners, the six labs will offer a deeper insight into drama-series content, animation production, impact and outreach strategy, online distribution and co-financing, genre-film production and the 2023 WEMW spotlight territories.

To make the decision easier for potential candidates, WEMW has launched a quiz that will hint at what might fit best. All of the information and the quiz itself be found here.

In detail, EAVE Slate will select up to eight companies that are developing a slate of audiovisual works and will combine the EAVE group-work method with a series of plenary sessions and individual consultancies focusing on strategic company planning, potential risk evaluation and company diversification. The main goal is to define realistic short-, mid- and long-term strategies for the selected companies and to outline how to pick the right projects to include in the company slates.

As for the labs, Anima Spirit is designed as a gateway for experienced producers and film companies coming from live action or documentary, who want to discover the world of animated film production. The lab is hosted by the CEE Animation Workshop team, and more information can be found here. Organised in partnership with the MIDPOINT Institute, Cold Open will select international producers with a background in feature films who aspire to shift to drama-series content. You can find out more here.

ESoDoc's lab at WEMW will focus on the design of impact campaign strategies. The team from Think-Film Impact Production will lead a carefully guided co-creation workshop, in which selected fiction and documentary projects will develop impact loglines, goals and key action steps. All information can be found here. As for the VoD Inspirational Lab, it provides an opportunity to better understand the diversity of the VoD landscape and the dynamics behind the on-demand ecosystem. It is curated by Silvia Cibien and Agustina Lumi.

Furthermore, the East & West Inspirational Lab, run in partnership with the 2023 East and West countries in focus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, and Spain, Portugal and Latin America), will offer a journey through the main funding, distribution and market opportunities offered by each of the spotlight territories. Meanwhile, the Genre Rules - Fantastic Film Inspirational Lab, organised in partnership with the Fantastic Film Forum of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, is meant as a hands-on guide to the inner workings of genre cinema. The genre film industry is highly specialised, with key players, industry events and subgenres of its own, and is constantly changing trends. The lab is designed to provide an in-depth overview of this sector, and will focus in particular on the best strategies to use to develop a project and place it effectively in the market.

The selection procedure for the labs will primarily be based on the applicant’s profile and motivation, and all selected participants will have the opportunity to physically join the full programme of WEMW.
