Czech animation has recently garnered international acclaim, showcasing the talents of a new generation of filmmakers like Daria Kashcheeva (Electra – see the news), Diana Van Cam Nguyen (Love, Dad – see the interview) and Natálie Durchánková (Rising Above – see the news). Alongside its experimental works, the Czech animation scene also boasts more mainstream and commercial offerings, including Proud Princess. This project is being co-directed by Radek Beran, of Little Man 2 (see the news), and David Lisý, who has worked on celebrated animated projects such as Alois Nebel [+lire aussi :

fiche film], and who penned the script. Together, they are reimagining a beloved classic of Czech cinema through the lens of 3D animation. The new adaptation aims to update the story with contemporary flair while respecting its rich legacy. Beran states, “Merging a narrative so deeply ingrained in our childhood memories and so universally cherished with the modern and, to some, impersonal medium of 3D animation poses a substantial challenge.”

Proud Princess, a 1952 film by Bořivoj Zeman, occupies a cherished position in Czech culture and has endeared itself to people across the generations. The animated remake combines the original literary work by Czech author Božena Němcová with iconic scenes from the 1950s movie. The story centres on the dynamic between Princess Krasomila and King Miroslav from a neighbouring kingdom. Captivated by a portrait of the princess, King Miroslav is compelled to disguise himself as a humble gardener to make her acquaintance and ultimately win her heart.

The choice of animation allows for both the original and the remake to coexist, enhancing the storytelling with the virtually unlimited creative freedom afforded by 3D technology. The directors aim to create a family-orientated animated fairy tale with global appeal. The animation style of Proud Princess is reminiscent of Disney's approach, particularly drawing comparisons to popular films such as Frozen and Tangled. A team of 20 animators, led by Jan Koníček at Prague's PFX studio, is responsible for the character and environment designs. These designs have evolved from initial sketches into intricate 3D models. Notably, the new version introduces animal characters that, despite the fact they do not talk, still play active roles in the story, marking a departure from the original.

Proud Princess is being produced by Luminar Film (Czech Republic) and PFX (Czech Republic), and co-produced by Czech Television, Polish studio Human and distributor CinemArt. The Czech Film Fund supported the film. The Czech theatrical release is set for 7 November 2024.
