This week, the seventh edition of European Work in Progress (EWIP) announced its line-up of 29 feature-film projects, which will be competing for several awards during this established industry event taking place from 14-16 October in Cologne in the run-up to Film Festival Cologne (17-24 October). At EWIP, 29 productions selected from a record number of 220 submissions will thus compete for multiple awards and nearly €60,000 worth of funding. This year’s sponsors are K13 Studios, MMC Film & TV Studios Cologne, LAVAlabs Moving Images, TorinoFilmLab, Way Film GmbH, usheru and mm filmpresse.
As a market platform, EWIP aims to showcase European co-productions that are in a more advanced state of production than other markets. This allows works to be more effectively evaluated for cinematic suitability, with a focus on high-quality appeal, crossover market potential, world sales distribution and TV broadcasting. Each of the 29 projects will be presented exclusively to EWIP guests and the international jury in a 15-minute pitching session, with an opportunity to show the current state of development and production as well as first scenes.
As previously announced (see the news), the EWIP jury for this year includes five esteemed industry professionals: Heino Deckert (founder of Ma.ja.de. Filmproduktions GmbH and managing director of Deckert Distribution), Priscila Miranda (film producer and CEO of independent film distributor Fenix), Sophie Stejskal (Filmladen Filmverleih), Urte Fink (commissioning editor for ZDF/ARTE) and Paul Ridd (CEO and director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival).
“Here, stories from the most diverse regions come together, and show that great films know no border and that their artistic quality and cultural richness are understood everywhere,” says Walid Nakschbandi, managing director of Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, about this year’s EWIP selection. This edition also builds on last year’s Focus on Africa, and will include three projects from Nigeria, Cameroon and Kenya.
EWIP takes place in cooperation with Film Festival Cologne, KölnBusiness, Creative Europe Desks Germany and the International Film Distribution Summit (IFDS). Indeed, the third edition of the IFDS will take place concurrently in Cologne from 15-17 October, once again offering a platform for distribution-specific discussion and networking. The focus of IFDS 2024 is on innovative distribution strategies in the sphere of B2C (business to consumer) communication, which includes addressing younger generations of cinema-goers and presenting business models from around the world.
At this year’s IFDS, Italian distribution company Lucky Red, under the leadership of Andrea Occhipinti, will receive the Best International Innovation Distribution Award. Lucky Red was the leading Italian film distributor in the first two months of 2024 and has brought internationally acclaimed films including The Boy and the Heron, Perfect Days [+lire aussi :

EWIP and the IFDS are both supported by the Film- and Medienstiftung NRW, the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme of the European Union and the City of Cologne. The cooperation partner for IFDS is the Creative Europe Desk NRW.
