This week, Madrid is playing host to the fourth edition of Iberseries & Platino Industria, an event run by EGEDA and the Fundación Secuoya in conjunction with FIPCA, with the support of the Community of Madrid and Madrid City Council, and with sponsorship from Madrid Film Office and Film Madrid, among other partners. One of the centrepieces of this prominent rendezvous for the Ibero-American audiovisual industries is the Iberscreenings programme, with screenings of new Ibero-American fiction series and feature content that’s fresh out or is soon to be released. It will see the participation of producers, distributors, and representatives of TV channels, platforms and international sales agents. The aim is to present this content to accredited professionals, the media and/or international buyers. This activity boasts the support of ICEX Spain Export and Investments, under its Audiovisual from Spain banner.
Thus, at the so-called “Capítulo UNO” (lit. “Episode ONE”) event on Tuesday 1 October, attendees were able to watch the first episode of Sutura, a Brazilian medical thriller from Spiral International and Boutique Filmes, produced for Prime Video and directed by Diego Martins, which is due to be aired on the Amazon platform in Latin America in late November. On Wednesday 2 October, there was a presentation of episode one of the romantic comedy Entre paredes, a Mexican series helmed by Noé Santillán-López, and produced by Star Original Productions (The Walt Disney Company Latin America) and BTF Media, as well as the European premiere of the second season of The Others from Globoplay (Brazil).
On 3 October, there’s a screening of the first episode of Favàritx (TV ON Producciones, Empatic Comunicación and Volf Entertainment), with contributions from Paloma Mora, CEO of and producer at TV ON Producciones: the show mixes crime, intrigue and corruption in a Spanish-Portuguese production directed by Rafa Montesinos and Adán Aliaga, which will be released in 2025 on RTP, IB3 and HBO. It tells of how a brilliant police inspector who has gone into exile on the island of Menorca will embark on a hunt for a serial killer who does all he can to make his crimes look like suicides.
Coral Cine will organise a screening of the first episode of the Uruguayan show Es amor? on Friday 4 October, in the presence of Marisa Quiroga, the series’ co-creator, and director Sebastián Bednarik. The fiction, which shifts between drama and comedy, took part in the first edition of the Iberseries & Platino Industria Co-production and Financing Forum in 2022, and already has a second season in development.
RTVE is one of the companies on the line-up of the Próximamente (lit. “Coming Soon”) section, showing off previews of its next two premium series. The first, Asuntos internos, is a drama-thriller set in a police station in a Madrid neighbourhood in the late 1970s. It’s headed up by one of the first female police officers in Spain, who gets embroiled in a scheme to uncover a network of corruption linked to heroin trafficking in the Spanish capital. It was created by Pedro García Ríos and Rodrigo Martín, and is toplined by Laia Manzanares, Silvia Abascal, Nacho Fresneda and Luis Callejo. The screening will boast the involvement of José Pastor, head of Film and Fiction at RTVE; Samantha López Speranza, the director of the series; and Gustavo Ferrada, head of Fiction at Mediacrest (Spain). The second show is Las abogadas (Mod Producciones), a drama based on real events, about the labour activists who survived the massacre at an office in Atocha in 1977 during the transition to democracy. Created by Patricia Ferreira, it stars Paula Usero, Irene Escolar, Almudena Pascual and Elisabet Casanovas. The show’s presentation will again see the presence of José Pastor, director Juana Macías and Guillem Vidal, an executive producer from Mod Producciones.
For its part, the Prime Video platform is also taking part in the Próximamente section on Thursday 3 October with the screening of Cada minuto cuenta, where the director and showrunner of the series, Jorge Michel Grau (Mexico), and Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios (Mexico), will show off a preview of this fiction about the 1985 earthquake.
Iberseries & Platino Industria is also hosting the presentation of HBO’s new Mexican original series Como agua para chocolate, with a screenplay penned by Curro Royo, María Jaén and Jimena Gallardo. In addition, Mediterráneo Mediaset has brought along El Marqués (Mediaset España and Unicorn Content) to the Segunda Ventana (lit. “Second Window”) strand, which is aimed at buyers in the hope of securing new distribution windows and territories as well as international market launches.
Again in Segunda Ventana, Secuoya Studios is introducing Los 39, a series interweaving thriller, mystery, survival and epic drama, zooming in on the sailors whom Christopher Columbus abandoned on the island of Hispaniola and the civilisation they encountered when they arrived, directed by Max Lemcke and Jorge Saavedra. With an international cast toplined by Hugo Silva, Pablo Derqui, Víctor Rebull, Diego Vásquez, Akima Maldonado and Daniel Grao, it ventures way beyond the official version of this chapter in history.
Iberseries & Platino Industria is organising a new Iberscreenings section for the first time at this edition, called Showcases, with an exclusive selection of teasers for features and series, including content set for imminent release. These sessions are accompanied by presentations made by the executives or sales agents at each of the companies involved: international sales agents of the calibre of Film Factory, Filmax and Latido Films will be taking part.
At Iberseries & Platino Industria, more than 170 buyers and commissioners are in attendance, hailing from over 30 countries: among them are companies such as Amazon Prime Video, Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, YouTube, Google, AMC Networks, Telemundo Enterprises (NBC Universal), VIX, Globo, A&E, VME Media, VRIO Corp, RTVE, Grupo Audiovisual Mediaset España, Atresmedia TV, Movistar Plus+, France Télévisions, M6, WDR Mediagroup, RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, Sky Italia, YLE-Finnish Broadcasting Company, ZDF Studios, MBC, AXN, HJ Holding, TRT TABII, KBS Media and SBS Television.
