The seventh edition of Proyecta, a collaborative initiative by Ventana Sur, the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes and the San Sebastián Film Festival, has unveiled a selection of 12 promising projects from emerging directors seeking additional funding and international partnerships for their debut or sophomore films. The event, a key driver of co-production between Europe and Latin America, will bring together filmmakers, producers, sales agents and festival programmers.
With Proyecta taking place as part of Ventana Sur's 16th edition, this year marks a notable shift, as it moves to Montevideo, Uruguay, for the first time. Running from 2-6 December, the event will include a pitching session by the project producers, followed by targeted networking opportunities, such as one-on-one meetings with industry professionals.
The 2024 Proyecta line-up reflects the initiative's commitment to fostering cross-cultural collaborations, featuring a mix of nine Latin American projects from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay, alongside three European projects with strong connections to Latin America. Notably, two of the European entries have Spanish co-production involvement, while Tropical Malaise by Jorge Cadena, representing Switzerland, previously participated in San Sebastián’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum (see the news). Five of the selected projects have already secured co-production partnerships, primarily with Spain and France.
As part of Ventana Sur, the premier Latin American film market jointly organised by Argentina’s Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (INCAA), Uruguay’s Agencia del Cine y el Audiovisual (ACAU) and the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Proyecta has solidified its role as a crucial platform for European-Latin American film collaboration. Co-funded by Creative Europe – MEDIA, the event aims to amplify the international visibility of the selected projects and expedite their development.
This year’s participants will also compete for a range of awards. One standout prize offers the chance for a project to take part in the Sørfond Pitching Forum in 2025, potentially unlocking access to Norwegian co-production funding. A newly introduced prize, the Sideral Cinema Award, promises a minimum pre-acquisition of €10,000 for international distribution rights for one of the selected projects.
In a further boost, for the first time this year, two producers from the selected films will be invited to the 2025 San Sebastián Festival, broadening their networking horizons and further solidifying Proyecta’s role in cultivating international film partnerships. These initiatives aim to strengthen co-productions between Europe and Latin America, and support the growth of fresh cinematic voices from both regions.
