Yesterday, BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) announced the nominations for its 78th annual awards ceremony, highlighting numerous titles that have been successful and acclaimed across the year. The event itself will take place on Sunday 16 February at London’s Royal Albert Hall and will be hosted by former Doctor Who actor David Tennant. BAFTA is composed of 13,000 creative practitioners, making it the largest UK film-industry voting body, with its international contingent continually growing.
Awards season pundits have noted that this year’s race doesn’t have an outright frontrunner, but the nominees here provide one of the closest indications yet of what may flourish at the Oscars. Edward Berger’s Conclave [+lire aussi :

Both have their timely features, with Conclave’s successful theatrical release coinciding with the US presidential election, while Emilia Pérez revolves around trans themes and provides a platform for thesp Karla Sofía Gascón to excel in the acting categories. However, the latter seems to be inspiring more passionate responses among industry voters, despite its backlash from general audiences on social media.
Looking further at the high-achieving European titles, The Brutalist [+lire aussi :

Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language rap biopic Kneecap [+lire aussi :

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora bagged seven nominations; it’s still considered a favourite to excel here and at the Oscars, its smaller-scale production not allowing it to increase its nomination total via the technical categories.
Also worth mentioning is the introduction of the inaugural Children’s and Family Film Award, after the dedicated Children’s BAFTA ceremony had its prizes merged into the organisation’s larger events. But with it strongly mimicking the nominees for the Animated Film gong, further tweaking of the long-listing process, and greater awareness from UK distributors of potential submissions, could see the new category put to good use.
