In the words of the director, “Growing up in Europe, I noticed that Cape Verde was often omitted from world maps and globes because of its small size. I felt that I came from a country that didn’t exist outside the walls of my home. To make it visible, I made Cape Verde and its people the central theme of my first feature. Hanami is born of the union of material and immaterial elements, stories, and experiences, which are universal in many Cape Verdeans’ lives. Often, those who leave dream of returning, and those who stay dream of leaving. Hanami’s connection to Japan wants to be as meaningful as it is playful. While the world we live in is defined by borders, in this film, they are ethereal.”

Fernandes was born in Lisbon to Cape Verdean parents and grew up in Switzerland. Prior to Hanami, her short film Nha Mila (2020) premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, in the Pardi di Domani section, and was a European Film Awards candidate, screened at over 40 international film festivals. It was nominated as Best National Short Film at the Sophia Awards 2021 and invited by MoMa and Lincoln Center in New York for the New Directors/New Films Festival.

The picture was filmed on the island of Fogo, one of the ten islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. The cast mainly consists of non-professional actors, having their first experience on the big screen. Daílma Mendes and Sanaya Andrade play Nana as a child and Nana as a teenager. The film also features French-Cape Verdean actress Alice da Luz as Nia and Japanese actor Yuta Nakano as Kenjiro. One of the rare feature-length fiction films shot in Cape Verde and among the first made by a Cape Verdean female director, Hanami was produced by Eugenia Mumenthaler and David Epiney for Switzerland's Alina Film, and Luís Urbano and Sandro Aguilar for Portugal's O Som e a Fúria, in co-production with Elda Guidinetti and Alessandro Marcionni for Switzerland's Ventura Film and RSI Radiotelevisione. Its international sales are handled by Morethan Films.
