, which competed in Venice in 2021 and which stars Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in its cast, the irreverent and acerbic Argentinian duo Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn have just wrapped filming on their new movie, Homo Argentum (working title).

Homo Argentum sees the directors reuniting with Argentinian star Guillermo Francella, after the success of Star+/Disney+ series The One in Charge, Duprat’s movie My Masterpiece [+lire aussi :

and, more recently, The Heist of the Century by Ariel Winograd, which was the second most watched Argentine film in cinema history on its opening day and which boasts fifth place in terms of tickets sold by Argentine titles.

In this episodic dramatic comedy Francella plays a whopping 16 different characters which “will confront conflicts reflecting the invisible pressure under which we live in a modern-day megalopolis,” said Cohn and Duprat. “The film presents a panorama of our ‘national being’ in a scathing and sarcastic but at the same time reflexive tone. Argentina is a country of immigrants, whose character is a sum of different origins and nationalities: Millions of Europeans came and mixed with Native Argentinians, creating a powerful and singular idiosyncrasy,” they added.

Shot in the municipality of Montalbano Elicona in Sicily, the lead character returns from Argentina to Italy, desperate to reconnect with his roots. But he finds himself bowled over by his relatives, the country’s inhabitants and the wonders of spectacular island. Joining Francella in the cast are Italians Tony Sperandeo (who won the David di Donatello Award for One Hundred Steps), Aurora Quattrocchi (nominated for a David di Donatello trophy via Nostalgia [+lire aussi :

The film is produced by Argentina's Pampa Films together with Spain's Gloriamundi Producciones – who previously worked on the two directors’ series Bellas Artes [+lire aussi :

in 2014 - in association with Italian outfits Dea Film and Blue Film, and will be distributed in Italy by Disney in 2025 by way of Buena Vista International.
