Liquid Love is a big-screen adaptation of the graphic novel Le goût du chlore by French artist Bastien Vivès, directed by Álvaro Congosto. The film has already been shot in Madrid and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and will wrap production next spring in New York. The cast of the movie, which blends mystery with romance and comedy, is led by Adrián Lastra (recently seen in the series Atasco 2 and Cites 2), Aida Folch (who appeared in Haunted Heart [+lire aussi :

Penned by the director with Víctor Nores, the script follows Nico, a Spanish waiter in New York who falls for a swimmer who vanishes after whispering something enigmatic to him underwater. Obsessed with finding her, he will discover that his fantasies conceal the key to his fear of living, and that true love may be closer than he imagines.

“Liquid Love is a magical love story about the dangers of idealisation, about everything we miss out on through fear of failure – ultimately, about the fear of living,” says Congosto. “I’m interested in portraying a man who is vulnerable and paralysed by fear. Bravery is no longer about hiding one’s feelings, but precisely about taking responsibility for one’s own vulnerability in order to love from a more sensitive and human place.”

Spanish filmmaker Álvaro Congosto is a multimedia artist who has built up his career in the USA and his home country. He also co-directed – with Ivan Peric – the Croatian documentary The Dying of the Light, about emigrant photographer Gea Koenig, and – with Alessandro Ingaria – Nel labirinto, an Italian production based around human pain. In addition, his short film The Suitor garnered 15 awards and 85 international selections, while LADIA, which premiered at the 2018 Nantes Spanish Film Festival, marked the start of his collaboration with choreographer Sandra Kramerová, for whom he has come up with the audiovisual design for her multimedia dance works. He is also an associate professor of Audiovisual Filmmaking at Carlos III University, and has taught at Boston University and Wheaton College.

“For a debut director, it’s a luxury to work with performers like this leading trio: they take direction with wonderful humility and conviction, and that is allowing us to find very special nuances that weren’t even in the script. Esmeralda’s brightness, the fragility of Adrián’s character and the charisma of Aida’s role are adding enormous richness to the film and some very interesting contrasts,” the filmmaker concludes.

Liquid Love is being produced by Patricia González for Eterno Pictures. For now, it only has a distribution deal in Latin America and the USA with Vip 2000 TV.
