Torrente for President, the sixth instalment in the series created, directed, written by and starring Santiago Segura, opened in a thousand cinemas across Spain on 13 March. In just a few days, it has reached the impressive milestone of one million admissions and is already the highest-grossing Spanish film of 2026, taking in more than seven million euros. The performance over the past few days represents 70% of all domestic box office takings, making this the highest-grossing weekend for Spanish cinemas since 2019.

series (read more) has achieved the best opening for a Spanish film in the last eleven years. It is also the strongest opening ever recorded for a comedy aimed at over-16s, among both Spanish and international, and the fourth-best opening for a Spanish film in history, surpassed only by The Impossible [+lire aussi :

(8.4 million).

What is most striking is that the film was released last Friday without the usual promotional campaign that accompanies any major commercial release. Only black posters bearing the title were displayed. The technical and creative team did not give any interviews, and there were no press screenings, which meant that no reviews were published before the release date. Even so, 150,000 tickets were sold in advance. According to the organisers, this ensured that the opening weekend would be driven entirely by fans of the franchise, with box office takings of more than a million euros guaranteed even before the first public screening.

It was four days later, on Monday 16, that the distributor, Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia, released the poster and stills from the film, held press screenings and hosted the official premiere. This event, usually part of the promotional campaign in the days leading up to the release, took place at a cinema in central Madrid and was attended by Segura himself and many of the celebrities who make surprise appearances in the film.

Torrente for President also arrives twelve years after the previous instalment in the comedy saga (Torrente 5: [+lire aussi :

) and 28 years after the first film (Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley), starring the corrupt ex-cop of the same name. Once again, the film offers a collection of gags of varying quality (this time targeting political leaders of all ideologies) where the constant presence of well-known Spanish personalities – and a few international faces such as Kevin Spacey and Alec Baldwin impersonating Donald Trump – acts as a major draw. Combined with the secrecy surrounding the film, this formula has delighted fans who have waited more than a decade for the long-awaited return of this sexist, scatological and rude character.

Torrente for President is produced by Santiago Segura and María Luisa Gutiérrez through the companies Bowfinger International Pictures and Amiguetes Enterprises (together with AIE Torrente presidente), with participation from Netflix and Atresmedia in association with Mogambo (Gonzalo Salazar-Simpson and Ricardo Marco Budé).
