Racking up seven Platino Awards, the Brazilian title (co-produced with France, Germany and the Netherlands) The Secret Agent, written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, received the gong for Best Ibero-American Fiction Film in Mexico on Saturday, adding to it Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Actor (an absent Wagner Moura was also rewarded via an Audience Award) at the 13th edition of the prizes handed out by EGEDA (Organisation for the Management of Audiovisual Producers' Rights) and FIPCA (Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers).

In one of his speeches, the multi-award-winning, Recife-born filmmaker stated: “In a time of lies, the world of cinema is a powerful tool, with stories brimming with poetry, adventure and fantastical tales, full of genuine human drama, of chronicles of love and affection.” Thus, Brazil once again emerged victorious at this awards gala, as it did at the previous edition, with the triumph of I'm Still Here by Walter Salles.

In the Best Actress category, young Spaniard Blanca Soroa scooped the Platino Award for Sundays by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, which also won the Audience Award for Best Film, and which co-stars Patricia López Arnaiz, likewise lauded by the public (as Best Actress).

The Best First Film trophy went to Deaf by her fellow countrywoman Eva Libertad, the recent winner of the LUX Audience Award. Also, Álvaro Cervantes, one of its performers, deservedly took home the statuette for Best Supporting Actor. Meanwhile, another Spanish production, The Dinner by Manuel Gómez Pereira, bagged the Platinos for Best Ibero-American Comedy and Best Costume Design (for Helena Sanchís).

Apocalypse in the Tropics by Brazilian helmer Petra Costa was crowned Best Documentary, while Olivia & the Clouds by Dominican director Tomás Pichardo Espaillat ended up clutching the Award for Best Animated Film. Camila Pláate picked up Best Supporting Actress for the Argentinian title Belén, directed by Dolores Fonzi, which also garnered the Platino Award for Cinema and Education in Values.

Spain’s winners continued with Sirāt by Óliver Laxe, which netted statuettes for Amanda Villavieja, Laia Casanovas and Yasmina Praderas (Best Sound), Mauro Herce (Best Cinematography) and Pep Claret (Best Visual Effects); and with the Spanish-Italian co-production by Alejandro Amenábar The Captive, for Ana López-Puigcerver, Belén López-Puigcerver and Nacho Díaz (Best Make-up and Hairstyling).

In terms of series, Argentina’s The Eternaut triumphed in the category of Best Miniseries or Cinematic TV Series, also racking up another seven gongs, including Best Creator in a Miniseries (Bruno Stagnaro) and Best Actor in a TV Series for Ricardo Darín, whose trophy was collected by his colleague Andrea Pietra, the winner of Best Supporting Actress in the category. The new Award for Best Long-running Series went to Scars of Beauty (Brazil) by Raphael Montes.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that the Spanish-French show The Anatomy of a Moment walked away with several trophies: the Audience Award for Best Actor (Álvaro Morte), Best Art Direction in a Miniseries or TV Series (Pepe Domínguez del Olmo), Best Sound (Daniel de Zayas), Best Cinematography (Álex Catalán), and Best Costume Design in a Miniseries or TV Series (Fernando García).
