Il fuoco che ti porti dentro, the new film by Edoardo De Angelis, adapted from the eponymous novel by Antonio Franchini, with a screenplay by Francesco Piccolo, Ilaria Macchia and De Angelis himself, will be presented in competition at the 83rd Venice Film Festival.

The film stars Vanessa Scalera and Lino Musella. Scalera is well known to Italian audiences for the TV series Imma Tataranni, while on the big screen she appeared in supporting roles in films by Marco Bellocchio, Nanni Moretti and Marco Tullio Giordana. She most recently appeared in Ferzan Özpetek’s Diamanti, for which she received a special Nastro d’Argento, while her performance in L'arminuta earned her a David di Donatello nomination, among other accolades. Musella won a David di Donatello this year for his performance in Feeling Better, having previously been nominated for Bad Tales. The cast also features Elena Radonicich (In My Room, L'isola degli idealisti), Ivana Lotito (the series Gomorrah), Nicole Malaj, Samuele Mazza, Tony Laudadio and Tommaso Ragno (nominated for a David di Donatello for Vermiglio).

Il fuoco che ti porti dentro follows Antonio, who fled Naples many years ago and has built a family and a successful career in Milan, far from his mother, Angela, a woman who is excessive for better and for worse, irresistible, old-fashioned and hostile like few others. She arrives for Christmas and seems determined to stay. Christmas Eve dinner thus becomes an emotional battlefield, both comic and ferocious, dredging up a past of abuse and misunderstandings. With a stubborn capon that refuses to end up in the pot, a daughter who may or may not ever turn up, and a distinguished, unexpected guest, the evening becomes a reckoning between mother and son that is destined to change the meaning of their bond forever: a love that burns like a fire within and never burns out, not even when you walk away.

“Angela is a character who attracts and repels me, like everything that truly matters to me. I told myself this when I decided to make this film, which is so dear to me. The invitation to the Festival fills me with joy and pride,” stresses Edoardo De Angelis, who made his feature debut in 2011 with Mozzarella Stories, with Emir Kusturica serving as executive producer, having been captivated by the young Neapolitan director’s “visionary talent”. His second feature, Perez., was presented out of competition at Venice, followed by Indivisible at Venice Days, which went on to win six David di Donatello Awards and five Nastri d'Argento. In 2018, The Vice of Hope was selected for the Contemporary World Cinema section at the Toronto International Film Festival and in 2023, The Commander opened the 80th Venice Film Festival in competition.

Il fuoco che ti porti dentro boasts cinematography by Vladan Radovic (winner of the David di Donatello for Black Souls) and editing by Lorenzo Peluso, while production design is by Carmine Guarino and costume design is by Massimo Cantini Parrini (a six-time David di Donatello winner and a two-time Academy Award nominee). The original score is composed by La Niña. 

The film was produced by Roberto Sessa and Chiara Grassi for Picomedia, a company of the Asacha group and part of Fremantle, with Rai Cinema. The film will be released in Italian cinemas by 01 Distribution. International sales are handled by Rai Cinema International Distribution.
