Marcus H Rosenmüller’s latest feature, Extrawurst, has become the most-watched German film of 2026 to date, crossing the two-million-admissions mark at the domestic box office. The comedy, which opened on 15 January, has blossomed into a major success, continuing to attract audiences more than six months after its original theatrical release. It is still screening in selected cinemas and at open-air venues across Germany, while it has also become available via home entertainment.

The achievement follows a remarkably strong theatrical run. Extrawurst crossed the one-million-admissions mark during its third weekend in cinemas, becoming the first 2026 release to reach that milestone. At the time, it was playing on 769 screens, the widest release ever mounted by StudioCanal Germany.

The film had already established several records before reaching two million admissions. Its opening weekend brought in around 345,000 tickets, making it the strongest start of the year at that time as well as the best opening for a German production in StudioCanal Germany’s history. It also became the strongest launch of Rosenmüller’s career (his filmography also takes in titles such as Beckenrand Sheriff, Snotty Boy and The Keeper) and the biggest opening for production company Lieblingsfilm.

In March, with 1.82 million admissions, Extrawurst became the most successful German film ever released by StudioCanal, overtaking Michael Schaerer’s The Little Witch, which racked up 1.81 million admissions in 2018. It simultaneously surpassed Rosenmüller’s previous career high, Grave Decisions, which also reached 1.81 million admissions in 2006.

Written by Dietmar Jacobs and Moritz Netenjakob, Extrawurst is based on their stage comedy of the same name. The story unfolds during a seemingly ordinary meeting at a tennis club, where the proposed purchase of a new barbecue quickly turns into a heated debate about identity, integration and social divisions. When the club considers buying a separate grill for Erol, its only Muslim member, the discussion spirals into an increasingly absurd confrontation between the different members.

The success has also given Hape Kerkeling, who plays the long-standing club chairman, his biggest theatrical hit to date. He stars alongside Christoph Maria Herbst (How About Adolf?), who plays an advertising copywriter who regards himself as considerably more sophisticated than the provincial club members. Fahri Yardim (Delicious) plays Erol, while Anja Knauer and Friedrich Mücke, alongside Gaby Dohm and Milan Peschel, round off the ensemble cast.
