Insularia – Islas del Mundo en Red will celebrate its tenth edition this autumn on the Canary Islands, with El Hierro serving as its main venue and Greenland taking centre stage as the guest film industry. Devoted exclusively to films from island territories around the world, the event will take its programme across all eight Canary Islands.

The gathering will open on 1 October at the Terrero de Lucha Ramón Méndez in Frontera with a screening of Fernando Colomo’s Isla Bonita, attended by the director himself. The main programme on El Hierro will run until 11 October, before the event continues its tour around the archipelago.

One of this year’s key focuses will be Greenland, presented in partnership with the Nuuk International Film Festival (NIFF). Screenings on 9 and 10 October in Valverde will introduce Canary Islands audiences to a selection of contemporary Greenlandic cinema, including titles such as Sturla Pilskog and Sidse Torstholm Larsen’s documentary Winter’s Yearning. The collaboration adds to Insularia’s international network of partner festivals, which also includes Cuba’s Isla Verde Festival and Chile’s Chiloé International Film Festival.

The festival will also strengthen its links with the Balearic Islands through its collaboration with Menorca Doc Fest, including the presentation of Aliss Schaeffer’s short film Com anar en bicicleta o indagacions sobre la geologia d'una illa, as well as a retrospective Insularia programme on Menorca.

BAFTA Shorts will return for a second consecutive year. After becoming the first Spanish festival to host the programme in 2025, Insularia is once again working with the British Council to screen a selection of British live-action and animated shorts nominated for and awarded prizes by BAFTA. The programme will be shown at the closing event in Valverde on 11 October and subsequently at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes on 21 October.

The competitive Panorama section will feature films from territories including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Azores, Iceland, Scotland, Australia, Réunion, Chile and the Balearic Islands. The awards will be handed out during the closing ceremony. Panorama 10, meanwhile, will look back at some of the titles that have accompanied the festival over its first decade.

The programme also includes Isla Mujeres, organised in partnership with the Spanish Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA). This year, the section will present a selection of shorts from CIMA 10, a project developed together with Amazon Prime Video, during the CIMA Canarias and Balearic Islands meeting on 8 October.

Ecoislas, focusing on environmental sustainability in island contexts, will showcase short films selected in collaboration with the Cuban festivals Isla Verde and La Manigua. The KM 0 Hecho en El Hierro strand, meanwhile, will turn the spotlight on works shot and/or produced on El Hierro that have circulated at international festivals.

Following the programme in Frontera, Valverde and El Pinar, Insularia will continue its travelling screenings across La Graciosa, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with activities scheduled until early November.
