From 11-17 October, Genoa will once again become a hub for independent cinema with the seventh edition of FLIGHT – International Film Exhibition of Genoa. Screenings, meetings and special events will take place across the city at venues including CineClub Nickelodeon, TIQU and MAIIIM, as well as in Savona, with free admission throughout.
The festival’s main section is the International Competition, which this year brings together 42 works from 21 countries, spanning features, shorts, animation and video art. The programme reflects FLIGHT’s focus on independent and formally diverse filmmaking, while offering audiences the opportunity to discover works from a wide range of international backgrounds.
The Flight in Liguria section, dedicated to films made in the region, has also expanded, with 20 works selected for this year’s edition. In addition to the Jury Prize, the winner will receive a flight over Liguria, offered by Aero Club Genova. More than 25 filmmakers from across Europe, as well as Canada, Brazil and the United States, will travel to Genoa to present their films, joined by more than 20 directors participating in the Flight in Liguria section.
FLIGHT 2026 will pay tribute to Renato Berta, one of the most important cinematographers in European cinema, who will be in Genoa for the meeting and master class “Light Must Tell the Story” on 16 October. The festival will also host the first Italian retrospective dedicated to Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet since the director’s death. Straub’s collaborators Barbara Ulrich-Straub, Christophe Clavert and Giorgio Passerone will attend, alongside Fulvio Baglivi, curator of the presentation “Straub-Huillet: Journeys”, also scheduled for 16 October.
Among the festival’s special events is Reframing Home Movies, which explores family memory and home movies as a form of cultural heritage. Focus Iran will present a selection of eight independent Iranian short films, offering a window onto contemporary filmmaking from the country. The Artisan of Ligurian Cinema Award will this year be presented to costume designer Elisabetta Beraldo.
The International Competition will be judged by a jury comprising Henry Hills (director, USA), Jill Daniels (director, UK), Iris Peralta (distributor and festival director, Spain) and Luca Malavasi (University of Genoa). The jury for the “Flight in Liguria” competition comprises Luca Massa, Francesca Pesce, Claire MacDonald, Francesco Virga and Giancarlo Giraud.
