The shortlisted films for the 39th European Film Awards, taking place on 16 January 2027 in Athens, have been revealed by the European Film Academy. A total of 68 features have been shortlisted for a possible nomination, with the winners to be voted for by members of the European Film Academy. Forty-five films have been selected for the fiction shortlist, 15 for the documentary shortlist and eight for the animation shortlist. Representing 40 European countries, the films bring together established and emerging filmmakers, including directors working across borders. Twenty-five films are directed or co-directed by women.
The shortlisted fiction and documentary films have been chosen by members of the European Film Academy board and invited European experts, whereas the shortlisted animated features were chosen by a selection committee composed of members of the Academy board and invited experts in co-operation with CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film.
The announcement of the European Film Awards shortlist marks the first step in the awards procedure. In the coming weeks, the 5,700 members of the European Film Academy will watch the shortlisted movies and vote on the nominees, with the exception of the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI, European Short Film, European Young Audience Award, LUX Audience Award and Honorary Awards, which follow separate selection procedures. Indeed, the nominations for the European Young Audience Award will be announced at the International Film Festival Glasgow on 1 November; the nominations for European Short Film, selected by the European Film Academy Short Film Network, will be revealed at the Seville European Film Festival on 13 November; and the nominees for the LUX Audience Award will be unveiled on 25 November.
