The 11th edition of Abycine Lanza (20-23 October), the independent audiovisual market of Abycine - Albacete International Independent Film Festival, has selected the 18 feature-film projects set to take part in Impulso CMM Desarrollo, one of its main support programmes for features in the early stages of development and production. The programme once again enjoys the backing of Castilla-La Mancha Media (CMM), which continues to support the development of new audiovisual projects through two grants of €17,250 each, aimed at helping the participating projects move forwards and into production.

Impulso CMM Desarrollo will offer the participating teams a professional programme combining specialised training, mentoring, pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings and networking opportunities with audiovisual industry professionals. Among the selected projects (the full list can be found at the end of this article) are the new animated feature by María Trénor (Rock Bottom), as well as new works by Laura Ferrés (The Permanent Picture), Alfonso Zarauza (Ons) and Pau Teixidor (Alumbramiento).

The eight projects selected for Impulso WIP, a section dedicated to features in post-production, have also been announced. The titles in this section will compete for the €7,000 Impulso Lanza post-production grant, the Filmin Abycine WIP Award (valued at €22,000 and linked to the film’s exploitation and distribution in Spain and Portugal) and the opportunity to participate in the Málaga Film Festival’s MAFIZ Work in Progress.

Among the selected projects are Una cabeza en la pared, the feature debut by Manuel Manrique, which imagines a future in which, three years after bullfighting has been abolished in Spain, a man destined to become a leading matador struggles to find his place in a world that no longer has room for him; Temporada Baixa, the first feature by Marta Font Pascual (the series Intimacy and Raising Voices), which explores the relationship between a widowed father and his two children during an autumn marked by change, silence and the need to reconnect; and Lóngquán: The Dragon Spring by Adrià Guxens, which follows a Catalan dancer of Asian descent who returns to China to confront an identity shaped by two cultures (see the news). Also selected are Material de guerra capturado al enemigo by Nacho Ruiz Capillas, an award-winning editor making his directorial debut with a documentary exploring family memory, exile and the fragility of recollection; El Canal de la Mancha by Daniel Sánchez López (Boy Meets Boy), which tells the story of two teenagers whose friendship develops as they search for their identities and their place in a world shaped by tradition, displacement, diversity and their own hopes for the future; La vida después by director-producer Clara Santaolaya, a story about caregiving, family and second chances; and O da miña nai, the feature-length directorial debut by actress Nerea Barros (Marshland), born of a need to confront death head-on, and transform grief into an act of life, remembrance and creation.
