Le danois Nikolaj Lie Kaas se fait remarquer en 1991 pour son interprétation dans Drengene Fra Sankt Petri de Soren Kragh-Jacobsen, un film acclamé par la critique, avec lequel il a gagné deux prix. Il a travaillé aussi avec Lars von Trier dans Idiots en remportant le prix du Meilleur second rôle en 1999.
