On the occasion of the Unifrance Meeting in Biarritz, the world’s biggest market for French audiovisual programmes (running 3 – 7 September, featuring 2,000 buyers from 48 countries and 58 sales agents, and showcasing over 1,000 audiovisual programmes of all genres), the CNC and Unifrance unveiled the annual sales report for French audiovisual programmes, which revealed a new record high of €214.8m in exports in 2022, up by 15.4 % on 2021 and by 4.7 % compared to the previous 2017 record.

Whilst linear broadcasters (TV networks) remain the leading buyers of French audiovisual programmes (accounting for 49.1% of programme sales), the share held by platforms is continuing to grow (43.1 % of export earnings in 2022 versus 33.5% in 2021).

French fiction is the most popular genre for export (accounting for €80.7m of sales, or 37.6% of total sales), namely thanks to hits such as HPI: Haut Potentiel Intellectuel, Marie-Antoinette, Chair tendre [+leggi anche:

and Vortex, and documentaries are likewise enjoying a return to form (€48.6m, up 32.1% on 2021).

In terms of the regions, Western Europe remains the leading buyer of French programmes (responsible for €87.3m, or 40.7% of global earnings), but its share has been shrinking over the past ten years on account of the sharp increase in sales of world rights. It’s followed by North America (13.5% of sales), Asia/Oceania (7.7% of the market share) and Central and Eastern Europe (4.7%).

When it comes to pre-sales, however, the report is far less rosy: after a record year in 2021, pre-sales fell by 50.3% in 2022 to €50.5m. And the same goes for foreign co-productions of French audiovisual programmes, where a 38.4% decrease has been recorded, reducing financial contributions to €54.4m.
