The inaugural edition of the Blender Film & Games Conference took place in the Croatian capital of Zagreb on Friday 4 October, on the premises of Algebra University. The one-day gathering of film and video-game industry professionals was organised by the Zagreb Film Office and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (through its Games Croatia project), and is an extension of the institutions’ previous industry and educational programme called PROFilm Days, which was held in prior years. The event hosted three workshops, 20 panels and presentations, as well as an AV career day event for students.

) and TV series (for instance, Ugly Betty), held a workshop titled “How to Realise a Script for a Hit Film”. Script consultant Siniša Bahun also held a workshop aimed at writing the script for a hit video game. The third workshop, titled “From 2D Photo to 3D World”, was led by animated film and new-media expert Ivan Šivak.

Producers Ivor Šiber and Ljubo Zdjelarević presented their work on Danilo Šerbedžija’s upcoming film Dražen, the first Croatian biopic of a world-famous sports legend, basketball player Dražen Petrović (see the news). With moderation by filmologist Dr Višnja Pentić, Nebojša Slijepčević told the success story of his Palme d’Or-winning short film The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent and outlined his plans for the future, both for the film and for his upcoming feature-length project. Producer Ivan Lovreček, editor at Croatian Radio-Television Maja Fišter and professor at the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Miranda Novak, who served as a consultant on the project, presented an upcoming Croatian TV series for youth audiences titled Sram (meaning “Shame” in Croatian), which is the Croatian version of the project that started in Norway as Skam and inspired countless adaptations all over the world.

Location managers Naomi Liston and Klaus Grosse Darrelmann shared some of the secrets of their trade at a presentation titled “How to Create the Sets for Global Hit Films”. Sam Sokolow, head of certification at Stage 32, also presented his platform, describing it as a tool to enable local professionals to forge a global career in the filmmaking business. Three academic institutions (the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Algebra and VERN University) as well as Inkubator PISMO presented their educational programmes in the AV sector. Furthermore, Branko Ružić put forth his ideas on how to use the globally popular Roblox virtual universe as a marketing tool for a film aimed at young-adult audiences.

However, the real emphasis of the gathering was on panels that attempted to integrate the two sides of the audiovisual industry, either by noting the similarities and differences regarding the work involved in individual aspects of them, or by discussing the possibilities of adaptation and conversion of material from film to video game and vice versa. Individual panels touched on the fields of writing, directing, animation, and music and sound design, gathering established experts in the various fields as speakers.

Adaptation was the topic of the “Crossmedia and Transmedia” panel, including speakers Aleksandar Gavrilović, Hrvoje Mitić, Ivan Murat and Peđa Čačić (all hailing from different companies and organisations in the very lively Croatian video-game industry) and of Dr Ilija Barišić’s presentation, in which he tried to detect current trends and forecast the future of adaptations from video games to movies and vice versa. Probably the most engrossing panel was the one about virtual production and the use of game engines in the production of films, series and TV programmes. Under the moderation of producer Velimir Grgić, filmmaker Antonio Nuić, Jurica Šimunković (from the Digital Dynamics production company), Hrvoje Boljkovac (from Light Film International), 3D artist Boris Hergešić, game developer Andrija Zorić and Armin Konjalić (from Riga-based virtual production studio LED Unit) discussed their experiences and the possibilities offered by the technology.
