Cineuropa: Why did you choose to work in film?
Morgan Bushe: When I was growing up my father used to record all his favourite films on VHS when they played on television. I remember from a young age getting to watch all these classic films like Touch of Evil, The Night of the Hunter, The Conversation, Barry Lyndon, The Three Colours Trilogy, so many great films it would be impossible to list them all. It was certainly from this that I first formed my love for cinema and storytelling.

Can you share some of your memorable experiences while producing?
Walking out of the Theatre Croisette at 8am after doing the final checks on the 35mm print for The Other Side of Sleep and seeing the queue that had already formed and stretched all around the block for the press screening that wouldn’t start for another 45 minutes is a good memory.

How did Love Eternal come about?
Love Eternal was originally a Japanese graphic novel that we optioned and then adapted. It was an Irish/ Dutch/ Luxembourg/ Japanese coproduction that received production finance from the Irish Film Board, Film Fund Luxembourg, the Netherlands Film Fund, T.O. Entertainment, Inc and Atlantic Screen Music Ltd.

What are your and Fastnet’s future projects?
I’m very excited to be in the process of financing three feature theatrical documentaries; the white- knuckle Icarus 3D from the director Joel Conroy that follows a pair of maverick B.A.S.E jumpers on their pursuit of human flight; Born John Burke (Died Muhammad Omar) from IDFA winner Ross McDonnell that retraces the steps of the only Irish man to die in the cause of jihad and whose death on the Afghan battlefields still remains shrouded in mystery; and The Disappearance from Ciaran Cassidy which I can’t really say too much publicly about due to its confidential investigative nature. I’m also in the process of writing my directorial feature debut.

Fastnet currently have Lance Daly’s new feature Life’s a Breeze, Brendan Muldowney’s Love Eternal and Andrew Gallimore’s Gentleman Prizefighter in postproduction. Notable projects in development include a comedy series on three hard-living Irish brothers who descend upon New York City in search of the American dream as well as a major contemporary adaptation of the fifteen short stories that feature in James Joyce’s Dubliners by a selection of the most talented Irish and international screenwriters and directors, both established and emerging.

You are one of EFP’s Producers on the Move. What does this mean to you and how will it help you during Cannes this year?
It’s always nice to be recognised for your efforts. I’m sure it will be a great opportunity to spend some time with some of my peers from around Europe and see if we can help one another to get our current slate of projects into production.

Producers on the move is an initiative of the EUROPEAN FILM PROMOTION
