Why do you produce documentaries? Do you see documentary cinema as an instrument of social and political change?
Miguel Eek:
For me, documentary creation and production are closely linked as a filmmaker-producer. Non-fiction is a language I feel comfortable with, which allows me to combine learning, curiosity, artistic creation, interaction with others, and introspection. Choosing to produce a specific film is a political act itself, but so is the approach to each production. In my case, I feel that all my cinema is political because it sneaks into decisions more unconsciously than intentionally.

How do you achieve and maintain work-life balance and foster overall well-being?
I just can't do it. Something wonderful and terrible at the same time is the way in which life and cinema are often inseparable. Personally, I live in a great dilemma in this regard. Mental health is a crucial issue that we must seriously address. We often fool ourselves into believing that living a life of self-exploitation for our work is a sign of vitality and success.

Where do you find audiences for your films?
This is another big issue for which I don't have clear answers. The films I produce run at festival circuits, very little in theaters and a long run on platforms like Filmin that program similar films. The cultural circuit is becoming increasingly important bringing the films to more unlikely audiences.

What projects do you have underway (including fiction films and other projects)?
I currently have two films that I’m taking to EFM Berlinale. One is Amilcar, a documentary about Amilcar Cabral. It's a co-production developed in Eurodoc with the support of Creative Europe among others. It's based on 16mm footage, archives, and real correspondence between the African revolutionary and his two wives. We are looking for a world premiere, sales agent, and presales.

The other is Dríades, a documentary at the rough-cut stage about the creative process of three musicians from the extremes of Europe: Spain, Portugal, and Norway. The film has been supported also by Creative Europe and is a co-production with Norway. We’re looking for a sales agent and buyers to complete it.
