With the call for applications currently open for the next edition of Serial Eyes, we spoke with Katrin Merkel, head of studies of the programme, about the type of talents they are looking for, how the training responds to the rapidly evolving series landscape, and why this might be the right moment for emerging writers and producers to apply. The application process, which closes on 9 March, includes submission of a CV, personal statement, analysis of a recent television drama series, proposals for two original TV concepts, a full‑length script, and a letter of recommendation. Full details and application guidelines are available on the Serial Eyes website.
Cineuropa: What kind of talents are you looking for in this new call for applications?
Katrin Merkel: We are looking for talented writers and producers who have already spent a few years working in the industry and therefore understand the specific demands of TV series production. Many of them already have initial contacts in and around the industry but may still lack the visibility and network needed to take the next step. Alongside excellent training with highly experienced tutors, we place a strong emphasis on close contact with the industry. Our aim is to help our alumni move one step closer to their ultimate goal: creating their own show.
How does Serial Eyes prepare participants for today’s rapidly evolving series landscape?
Of course, our participants learn to work with trends, dramaturgy and the relevant technical tools. But the real challenge is developing a deeper understanding of how these elements relate to technological developments and the economic realities of the industry. By once again accepting producers next year and encouraging close exchange between them and the writers, we hope to help foster a new generation of series creators who combine strong professional skills with a genuine curiosity about the market as a whole.
What advice would you give to prospective applicants who are considering applying?
Applicants should have a clear sense of where they stand in their careers and what they are looking for next. Experience shows that those who benefit most from the programme are people who have already reached a certain stage and are looking for exactly the kind of impetus we can provide. When the timing is right, Serial Eyes can offer a significant boost – something reflected in the growing success of our alumni, many of whom are involved in internationally successful series. So anyone who feels this might be the right moment for them should definitely apply – the deadline is only a few days away.
